• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

just sent a link to the auction to the guy who would be most qualified to confirm or deny the authenticity of this piece.

Why would that complicate things? He was not the only one doing them....though his would be the best examples I would think.

Michael did some of the most meticulous repair work that anyone has ever done for me. (Early 90's) Truly a legendary luthier of the highest order.

From strictly a woodworking and parts availability perspective, this should be a relatively easy design to copy. Given that there are not too many originals and the "average" guy likely does not have access to an original, an older and very accurate copy (by this builder or other) has potential to be mistaken as an original at some point.

True....except for a few of the parts...which are near impossible to get.

I would also bet Michael has meticulous records and photographs...he's that kinda' guy. :salude

Parts like the case and pick guard perhaps? Given enough time and effort by multiple skilled builders, anything is possible.

Most everything else appears that it can be borrowed from other Gibsons of the era.

Sorry I'm starting to drift into hypothetical land.

...and tuners....backplate.

Scrounging these parts are way harder than you suggest. We're talking about a guitar made in the dozens...not like the Les Paul which were made in the thousands.

You know? Now I could care less about korina explorers. My interest in them has suddenly gone South. And after reading this NOBODY has the right to call ME insane.

Man--you`ve got me all confused Mr Renderit! You say that You COULD care less about korina explorers? Or you could NOT care less about korina explorers? My head is spinning--please help me!

Still my question about the inked 1960 number is unanswered. I do not know if it is real or not. I have handled 3 Korina Explorers and was always fascinated by them, from what I recollect and my very limited knowledge this one looks right, though there are some parts in question. I do vividly recall talking about the original V's and Explorers in Kalamazoo in the 70's and being told that all the pick guards on the Explorer were hand cut and that they would be doing the same for the 76 Reissue.

As has been noted by some, talented builders can easily make both V's and Explorers but original hardware and cases would be much harder to come by. Still outside of 9 17something all the Explorers had 58 inked on numbers right? Why would a fake have a 1960 number, and would this help prove or disprove the theory that it left the Gibson factory in 1960?

As far as the missing case, of the 100 or 200 known Korina Explorers only 19 or so still have the case:teeth

Also, more important, my new friend Little Marco promised me a call from Blighty to no avail from my Long Islander... Little M, I knew it wasn't happing and him and I know the reason... We are smart easterners... We have a certain trate that others would not get... You are AOK with me, but you would never get it and it can never be explained... Ask him yourself... BH P.S., Mr.T, is this ok?

There were no promises Hernia, that's not how our conversation went. I'm not my brother's keeper.

Nevertheless, we talked about the guitar yesterday, and I told him that you'd try to get hold of him and to expect a call about the guitar. He's in the UK for the rest of the week, and driving around a lot, so play nice and call him at a sensible local time.

Marco

PS, the "we have a certain trait" line is pure Yorkshire......but you would never get it.

Hi Al,
From my info there were 4 know '60 Explorers with inked on serial numbers, there could have been more? I have a list with 3 of the numbers on and also 2 with impressed numbers. there was supposedly one batch of 38 and another possible batch of 40 made. It is stated in Ted McCary's book that there was a rack with Explorer's and V's still in the white wood(no finish) for a number of years. Some were probably numbered some not, some were completed with gold hardware some with nickel which I sure you already know.
There was also an area at Gibson known as "The Morgue" were bodies, necks, unsaleable, damaged models. were stored in case they were of use in the future. I would guess that various Korina guitars in different stages of completion were there too.
Hope this is of help,
Best Regards,
Clive Brown

Gary, I won't be calling. Keep me out of this. I'm not interested and your friends have really pissed me off. Big time. I won't poke the bear. The bear won't meet Ted Nugent. Maybe if you kiss the Pope's ring he'll absolve you from your sins? This guitar should never have gone back into circulation. Anyway, I have a plane to catch, meeting with my publishers you see. I'm getting out of the vintage guitar business. Too many crooks you see. I'm getting into writing books and have been asked to contribute to some Guitar publications. My first working title is 'Rats Can't Swim'. It's kind of a black comedy, sometimes verging on the absurd and ridiculous you'd think it a work of fiction. It's a Yorkshire tragedy. And it's all true.........you'll love it.

Peace

Your friend, Richard The Heavy Heart.
