• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

OK Axel, so which one of us has been wearing it the wrong way...? I've always worn it that way.

I used to just use whatever straps were available nearby. But with the quality of guitars I've been buying more recently I figured it was prudent to outfit all my guitars with Straplocks and get some high quality straps.

I found Italia Leather Straps selling on eBay. Looked like a great deal on some nice Italian leather straps. When my first strap arrived (it took six weeks since they are all made to order), I was amazed. Really beautiful, strong and comfortable straps for a very reasonable price. They regularly cycle straps through on eBay, and if you are patient you can get a very high quality strap made to order for about $ 20.

I ended up buying about six of them in assorted combinations of colors that match up with whatever sunburst or paint layout is on a particular guitar. I highly recommend them in the 2.5" wide size, and specify "long" in the order. It's $ 1.00 more for "long" on the eBay auctions. They have some labled "Studio Series" where the leather is quite a bit stiffer. I'd avoid those.

I have a custom made one. Since I live in "Horsetown USA" I had a saddle maker do it for me. It has a pocket for my wireless in the back and a pocket for the slide in the front.

Guess I'm the oddball here. I used to play Strats and Hendrix is one of my main inspirations. I liked this strap cuz of the hippy/'60s vibe it has. I also like how the this type is 100% adjustable. I can never seem to get it just right with a leather strap with holes.
I still use it on my Les Pauls. But I'm thinking of getting a leather one.

I think Levy's make a few really hippy looking ones too. In fact, I think they have a series of Hendrix straps. But if you can't get the holes to line up, well...

Go for it. I'm reasonably sure I'm not the first. I had a pick pocket strap for years that I used to do that with but one day I opened up my case and that strap was smelling REALLY funky:wow . I tried to find another but I don't think they make those any more. That's when I went to a saddle maker.

Everytime I go to a music store with my wife she makes me buy a strap. Last time it was a fully carved Levy's model with pentagrams and coffins and skulls. "this will look great on your SG!" $100 later!
Yesterday we went to the vintage shop here in town and she saw the new dunlop "lucky 13" series. I looked and walked away..,she followed, with one in her hand. "This will go perfect with your new Gretsch!" She was right I guess but I wasn't looking. At least this one was only $30 with a coupla VG back issues thrown in.

She just hates my fave strap. Its a poo-brown Martin strap my mom got me when I was 10. I'm 32 now...needless to say that straplocks are essential with it!

My favorite music store used to have a sign up that said "Straps made from dead cows are best."

I used to make my own straps out of cotton webbing and leather scraps. I still have 2 of those straps and use them regularly.

For heavy guitars I have a really soft, really wide leather strap. It's made the heaviest guitars bearable.

This one is my #1 strap. I had it made to resemble Peter Green's. When I first got it, the leather was really stiff. It's softened up over the past few years and I quite like it now.

My other favorite is one of the old 50's style "pad on a thin strap" types.

I've got another strap that just hasn't worked out. It's most commonly used as a sling for M-60/M249 machine guns. I used it during Desert Shield/Desert Storm as a sling for a 60mm mortar tube. It had broken and I had it tucked away with the idea of making a guitar strap out of it. A few years ago I finally got around to repairing the strap and getting the leather to make a strap out of it. There's still dirt from Saudi Arabia/Iraq in the fabric. It's "cool" but not the most comfortable strap.

I just picked up a Levy's Tooled Leather strap #M17TO8. It's padded and just under 2 3/4" even though the catalog says 2 1/2". Very well made, comfortable, heavy duty strap.

My straps are like my guitars. The one's I've made my living with all have stories. When all is said and done, these will be the last four guitars I'll own. They've been with me a while. The Tele most recent in 1999. Some of these straps I've had for over 20 years. The gold sparkle strap came form a '58 Strat case I bought in the 1980's. Back when we first started traveling, I would tie my guitar strap on the grill of our rental truck as a ritual for travel. (I know, pretty stupid). There was a certain strap that we named and was our hood ornament from truck to truck for about 4 years. One time when we turned the Ryder truck in, I forgot to take it off the grill. When we realized what had happened, we drove nearly 200 miles back to the truck rental to look for that leather strap. The truck was gone and never saw it again. Anyway, I don't know what was wrong with our young hippie brains but that was the kind of foolish stuff that went on. Here are my favorite guitars with favorite straps.
