• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

Those Evil Robot amps have a cool, two dimensional tone to them. but they drastically color every thing you play through them.

I have played a WHOLE BUNCH of really good bursts, and Gladys is an extraordinary one....:jim

I haven't played a lot of bursts, but I have played Gladys.

One area that I think is overlooked is that the "sound" of a Burst (compared to a RI) is not going to be heard by many people. It's so much more about the "feel" of the instrument.

Hell, most guys couldn't tell what kind of guitar is on a given recording.

Indeed. Early ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin albums are good examples where Les Pauls are actually Telecasters.

I like the tone here, usually I find the philx videos to be very 2d, they seem to be taking more care with the sound now that they're trying to sell the amps too! I agree with previous posts that the lure of 50's les pauls are more about feel than tone. Boutique pups and a tasty amp can get you 95% of the way there. The other 5% is made up of the way that you feel when playing one of these guitars.

The amp is very dry and without reverb it's not going to sound the same as some of the recordings out there. To me the speakers aren't broken in yet. I would have liked to hear Gladys on the original amp they had. The amp any guitar is played on really can make a difference. I still can tell this guitar is a good one.

The guitar sounds as good as anything else I've heard through that amp (via a Youtube vid). Really not a fan of the amp at all. It probably sounds great in the room, but it seems to me that it doesn't record well.

Agreed:)

Well, as we used to say in Jersey - "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him suck your dick..."

As we said on the Catskills Mountain creeks "If you don't have the guts to jump off the cliff, your probably going to get hurt climbing back down." :)

Here in Texas it's, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make love to it when people are around."

The Evil Robot may be a good replica of the Magnatone but it doesn't come across as such in any of the FA videos. I wouldn't judge any guitar through that setup and you won't find me standing in line to get an ER. I'd stick with the original.

Yes - I LOVE not living in Arizona! (No offense to anyone that DOES live there; it just wasn't for ME)

As my good friend Mssr. Daughtry also indicated, EVERYTHING is "for sale". I used to not think so when I was a younger man - now I know better. What Charlie is saying (knowing him, and reading between the lines) is that "material things" are just THAT - material THINGS. He and I have both been very fortunate to have owned some REALLY great "things" in our respective lifetimes so far; indeed, we both STILL really own some great things. But we're also even LUCKIER having great spouses, great pets, and great friends - as a man gets older, (if he's SMART) he realizes that THOSE are infinitely more important than the greatest of material things.

As far as Gladys being "for sale" - Gladys has virtually ALWAYS been "for sale" - anybody wants her, now is as good a time as ever to "Nut up or shut up"!:ganz

Perfect priorities!

Gladys sounds great... For the few minutes we actually get to hear her. Phil and Narnia boy should STFU and just play. Oh well, I guess it was better than nothing. Joe's a good egg for letting us all get a taste. Thanks Joe!

Ok I just got through sitting through these vids and to me Gladys sounds GREAT when we actually get to hear her for a few split seconds with Phil X digging in. I could do without all the talking, and the Esquire, and the random English blokes. Despite all the distractions Gladys still shines through, and I'm happy to hear her!

Some guys are NEVER going to get the whole recording guitars thing whether it's on tape or on YouTube. That's just the way it is. To paraphrase someone else in this thread, there is enough here to tell that Gladys is a DAMN FINE GUITAR! :peace2
