• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I've always thought that in 3XX's guitars that the "D" stood for Double Cutaway. I was chatting with someone the other day and they said it stands for "Double Pickup"..
Anyone have the right answer? Thanks!!
I know the "T" stands for Thin and the "C" stands for Cherry..

It stands for double pickup.

TDC = Thinline / Double pickup / Cherry

A single pickup, cherry red ES-330 would be an ES-330TC.
A double pickup would be an ES-330TDC

A single pickup, blonde ES-225 would be an ES-225TN
A double pickup would be an ES-225TDN

A single pickup, sunburst ES-175 would be an ES-175
A double pickup would be an ES-175D

Also, and somewhat confusingly Gibson used 'C' to denote guitars with cutaways that wouldn't ordinarily have them (prior to the cherry finish being available).

So an L-5CESN = Cutaway / Electric Spanish / Natural
Then you'd get an L-4N (Natural finish no cutaway) and an L-4CN (Natural finish, cutaway).

Hope that helps sort out the naming convention for you!

Well done, sir. I made some slight edits to your list in order to emphasize the truth here. :)

My ‘64 bug provided me with skill sets I will never forget:
  • Always park uphill - you never know when you will need to push start
  • Look down to gauge your speed - the hole in the floor never lies
  • Become independent - you cannot use a battery jump because of the 6 volt, positive ground electrical
I push started that car through 6 winters during grad school. Amazingly, that car started up most every time and it seemed to run on fumes. I sold it to another student for a little more than I paid.

Best memory...I met my wife to-be when I had that car. The first time out was winter and she asked me to turn on the heat. I handed her a tattered blanket...that was the heater!:spabout
