I just tried it on my R9 and my fingernail didn't leave a mark. Success! I got one of the good ones!!

I've been on this forum for like 10 years now and don't think I've ever read anything about hard wood, finish yes, but not wood. Gibson using soft, sticky, thick intro has always been a complaint.

I don't care if a bunch of termites built a housing development inside the neck. I care about how it feels, and the sound that comes out of the speaker.

back in the day folks mentioned that a large part of a LP guitar tone was derived from the hardness of the neck - which of course is a product of the wood used - its age and how it was treated

My own limited experiments bear this out - having noted that very hard lumber produces a "snappy" quality which is very desirable

now back tracking there were various discussions on this forum along these lines, with several members making statements about their reissues such as :

" The neck wood is so soft I can leave a deep mark in it with my fingernail "

fast forward many years and I am curious if this still holds true - does the Fijian lumber exhibit this softness or does it show the desirable hardness traits

if anyone cares to do this test on their own Historic I would be highly interested in hearing the results in the form of a post to this thread

(basically hold the guitar with the reverse facing you and utilizing your thumb attempt to drive the nail into the back of the neck - then note if a large permanent crescent shaped mark is easily left )

Take a pick axe to it. Doesn’t break the neck? You know you have a good one

trust me your fingernail is not even remotely strong enough to penetrate through the finish and into the bare wood. But you'll leave some nice dents in the nitro
The post itself is bizarre as it is and why you'd even suggest doing that is nuts. Remove the truss rod cover or the neck pickup. You'll have bare wood and you'll be able to "nail it" to your heart's content.
Make sure you schedule a manicure after you're done

Yup! It works - and the results tell me I’ve got a good ‘un!
Just to be sure, I did the whole guitar!
Sounds as good as it looks (and smells)!
