• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

KT66s...

Jumping in a bit late here...

The KT66s are my favorite tubes in the Soldano circuits I have tried, both in my home-built SLO and in the Hot Rod 50+ I currently have. I prefer them over 5881's, 6L6's and EL34s. They just have a smoothness that I like!

BTW, the Hot Rod amps sound very good and you can pick them up for about $700 for the single channel and $900 for the two channel versions. May be a cheaper way to get in the SLO ballpark.

For what its worth, I have to honestly admit the Soldano Hot Rod 50+ sounds better than my homebuilt SLO did.

I just sold my KT-66 loaded SLO and the guy who bought it was over the moon, and used the same description.....he was blown away at how smooth the amp was.

I just put KT66s in my SLO, replacing the Svetlana 6L6s, and WOW!!!
Warm and bright, with no more sizzle and a nice lower mid girth! Sweetness!

slo 100

I had two SLO 100's, one with all the mods, made 2001(KT-66 tubes). The other, no mods no efex loop 5881 power tubes made 1990. The 1990 sounded a lot better IMHO. It had a lot more crunch and in yer face sound no buzzy harsh sound. I put Kt-66 power tubes in the 1990 which gave it more bass but also made it sound a little cleaner(more headroom). I also had a hot rod 100 which was to me every bit as good as the SLO 100. I called up Soldano many times (great guys) I spoke to Mike himself and he said the original SLO 100 was designed with out an efex loop and to him less is a whole lot more when it comes to the best tone. i also think that preamp tubes a crucial to the best tone in the these amps. Stick with the Hot rod 100 and save the cash.

I've had my SLO since 1990-1991. First of all, killer amp with no problems since I bought it new from Soldano.

I don't get the buzzy/harsh deal. I think it's important to start with the mid and treble setting relatively low and slowly bring them up. This amp can sing and be as smooth/mellow OD as you like or quite bright and in you face with lots of in between tones.
Truly wonderful lead channel and the crunch channel is pure heaven.

What's the "SRV" mod? Does anybody know what's involved with the mod?

It's supposed to scoop mids for a BF Fender kinda tone. There was some debate about this on H-C amps, because most didn't think SRV's tone is mid-scooped. His lead tone is definitely not scooped, the TS808 is a midrangey tone.

Has anyone run a Yamaha T100 with the KT66s? I understand it's basically the SLO with a really cheesy reverb circuit (which I don't use anyway).

I think the reason people think scooped mids for the SRV tone is that he had the huge bass coming from that 15" speaker, and the really bright high end from a cranked BF fender-ergo it sounds sorta scooped. I don't think you can really reproduce his sound by scooping a regular amp, though.
