So here's a picture pre logo repositioning. You can see the paint has chipped off the brass nut from where it was sprayed over by Gibson at the factory.



I think we're definitely looking at an over sleve protecting the thread of the truss from the paint.

You are safe. Vintage Les pauls had the truss rod cavity sprayed black:

By the way, before going this far, did you tried first just swaping the tuners for heavier ones, like Grovers? The most effective thing you can do to solve resonance problems is to add/remove mass, and I'm not sure if the changes applied in this makeover will affect much in that regard. You mentioned that the guitar was wery light, that's a factor.
Hope everything comes out fine, but it's an expensive risk.

Yeah, I didn't try it but knew it may be an option. I'm not a big fan of the Grovers on Les Paul's although I do like some of their other offerings I have on some of my other guitars. And yeah, I know. Big risk.....

I love how Grovers look but I discard them because they turn a fall instantly into a headstock break. Klusons absorb the shock much better.
You can also try adding a capo in the headstock, and sure the dead spots disappear if you lean in it agaist the wall, but that's not practical. A brass tailpiece might be another option, but chances of it working are much lower

I tried the capo trick but alas, no success. It did however fix it if I pushed the head stock up against a wall but as you might appreciate that would be a problematic solution if playing out.

Unless I could find a sympathetic singer to work with who would let me push it up against his back....

I haven't heard of the Brass Tail Piece one before but it makes sense.

The week is nearing an end and we have another update.

Side note, Florian was planning on re-using the nut I made but unfortunately it's going to be too low with the new Jescar frets so he will be making a new one. I've opted for bone rather than nylon for " The Argonaut. "

" In these pictures I'm dressing the frets. I begin with 240 grit sand paper, carefully checking with a straight edge for the perfect fret job. This is particularly important because of the deadspots.

Then I refine the surface with 400 grit paper. After that I crown the frets with a diamond fret file. The rest of the sanding and polishing will be done after the painting. "

Yeah, it really is. Another piece of London's music history has been erased. It was a great little studio. Very sad.

You might know my brother in law, he plays Bass with The Men They Couldn't Hang. He's done alot of other stuff over the years, he was in one of the incarnations of the UK Subs at one point and played on one of their albums. I've no idea which one though, I was never really a big fan of Punk although I appreciate it more the older I get.

So we start the week off with the making of the nut. I've opted for vintage bone for this one.

Today's update. I really like this one, I think it's a nice touch.

Throughout this project I've been closely looking at more pictures of real 50's Gibsons than I've ever done before in my life. One thing I had noticed was it looked to me as though the lines of the other Historics I own appear a little sharper especially around the head stock. Florian addresses this in the final preparations before the refinishing begins.

Another bit of info from our Bavarian Film Star....

" For the dust on painted surfaces I first blow it off with the spraygun but I do this before preparing the gun. There are special wax-cloths as shown in the picture below which can be good but the bare hand still is best. "

I'm very happy with the shade of Gold.

Florian had asked me over the Weekend to provide a couple of images to use as a guide for the finishing. It was harder than you might think.

I was perhaps over thinking things a little but it occurred to me what if our devices are making the colours appear differently? What if the lighting in the studio is giving a false representation of the actual colour?

We ended up having a good chat about it all and sort of verbally confirmed we were looking at it the same way.

Gotta say its pretty exciting for me to see paint hitting the wood.
