• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Thanks, guys!

Why would you get hate mail on a beautiful Les Paul ?

There are many people who feel that it would be a sacrilege to strip the paint off a vintage goldtop to see what kind of top is hidden underneath, to see if it would make a nice conversion. And many who might feel that it should be restored to its original gold glory. I just wanted to make it clear that I bought it already stripped and refinished, love it as-is, and have no immediate plans to touch it (except to play it, that is).

Great top! So you are sure you're not going for a brazilian rw fretboard? Sure you won't regret that down the line?

I had budgeted for the Brazilian board. I'm giving it some serious thought. Florain has offered me a really tempting deal, very generous, I'm still trying to decide. I'll post when I get my mind right.

Personally, I'd do it. Mainly for the looks, most reissue boards just look a bit pale to me. Also, Florian will remove the trussrod condom (if it is a pre '13 model), which some say improves the sound as well. I went with it on my makeover and I'm really glad I did.

Already done--I wouldn't touch it. That's a pretty guitar, Frank. Enjoy, brother.:jim

So I'm wringing my hands and pacing the floor. It's a big decision to add the braz board. it's a lot of extra to the budget. Florain has been great about it offering to reduce the price a bit which is a big gesture for someone that does such beautiful work. He has kindly selected a very special board from his private stock, over 100 years old. It's a big decision and a lot of extra work for Florian. Hand shaping the neck, inlays on the board, all the detailed work of the "correct nibs", correct fret wires and then rolling the edges. I'm searching my soul.

Here is my unsolicited 2 cents . You are having all of this wonderful work done by a master craftsman ,now is the time to give it the Braz Board . You said Florian is even going to reduce the price a bit -to me that is a sign to go for it and this is when you do it . I think down the road you will be happy if you choose to do it . Best wishes !!!

I own two Les Pauls with Brazilian fretboards and would like them just the same if they did not have Braz. You get Braz for two reasons:

1. To do the invisible work removing the truss rod sheath and use hot hyde. The sheath is what makes the biggest sound difference, in my opinion.
2. Having Braz will make you sleep better at night.

Personally, I would not take that fretboard in the above picture. It's just too brown. If I select a Braz board, I want it as black as possible.

Frank, I can't believe you stripped a vintage gold top. Talk about smearing a shit stain across the Mona Lisa. How about the next time you have a bright idea like this to RUIN a piece of history, you run full speed into a wall, head down, and maybe you'll come to your senses after regaining consciousness. You must be fucking mental.

See...that is why he included a disclaimer.
Just kidding. It looks great. :salude

Ah the discriminating eye, the practiced hand of the master. I never considered what a difference a deep and sensuous carve could make. It really highlights the contours and draws the eye across the landscape of the instrument. It’s artwork really. Florian has made templates from authentic vintage Les Pauls, you can see in the picture, but it’s his eye that makes it unique.

The carve is looking the bomb. Florian really outdid himself on this one. I've been pouring over pics of vintage Gold tops, this really looks the biz. So much better than my R0.

Florian sent video this morning of the neck shaping process. The vid is great, it's interesting to see how much of the shaping is done by template and then how the finish is done completely by feel. Enjoy.
