• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I tried this "RioGrande" settings : I don't think that it's Billy's Marshall; maybe that one is one of Dusty's Marshall on Billy's side !
It would be cool to see the settings of the Marshall at the right of this one on the pix.

anyway, here are some short mp3s of my Pearly direct through my 67 Marshall 100W (nothing in between...) into a 4X12" basketweave

same settings as on the pix #2 : http://dicitte.com/images/RioGrande_settings.mp3 it does sound too "bassy" (personnal...)

my personnal "ZZ zone" settings : http://dicitte.com/images/ZZzone_settings.mp3
closer to Billy's Marshall tone and more woody (love that setting)

Gaston :salude

Sweet tone!

I have to add that Billy used the Super Bass and Dusty used the Super lead. Also the Super bass had a 500pf bright cap and Billy always ran a treble booster. His settings in the studio to live would be different. But still this is a great comparison.

a '67 Super Lead is almosy identical (breadboard speaking) as a 1969 Super Bass.
The power section of my plexi has the double bridge rectifier though (mid '67).

Here's a pic of Gibbons' amp setup, along with a pic of him playing an immaculate 58/59 Flying V.

:hmm All three amps settings are the same !!!!
Listen to the soundfile I did with these settings, and it doesn't sound like Billy's tone. I think that my theory of him fooling us with those apparent settings aren't crazy... :hmm

What do you think ?

and thanks again WP Blues for those great pictures

Gaston. you figure @ P4 B8 M0 T0 V1 8 V2 0 ? Kinda of an Eric Johnson lead marshall setting. Your Billy G setting is very close to Greg Martin's settings. That's the cool thing about these old plexi's , lots of tonal magic with 6 knobs. Check out Pete Thorn's old Marshall settings YT "tutorial". He gives a ton of insight into dialing in these beasts. Fun stuff.

Also the Rio Grande cabs are dimensionally larger with front loaded speakers. It gives a bigger yet tighter low end (in my experience playing through one of these)

The tone is close as it's going to get. The rest of the difference may be that he was using very light strings, no thicker than .010"

Also I'm not hearing as much pick attack or palm in your playing. That makes a huge difference.

Presence at 2
Bass at 1
Middle at 10
Treble at 9
Volume I at 8+
Volume II at 2 (no jumping; acting as ghost tone !)

Jan 30th edit : speed up the tempo and delayed Left side just a little and only kept the "Waitin for..." part !

I really like the first version but they are both great. Thanks for the clips and analysis. Had a friend with an old Superbass back in the day, but I had no idea what to do with the beast at the time. Now I wish I could time travel!

Gaston! I think you are getting real close to the early ZZ 70's live tone. I am not up to date on if the Rothwell booster if it is a %100 clone of the range master? The original cuts all the bass off and is bright.

Matched to this your close
