I've spent about 1/2 of the day reading a lot of history about PAFs, PAT#s, TTOPs, etc.

A few questions that seem to be unresolved:

1) Are there PAFs with white and black leads?
2) Are there PAFs with slotted brass screws?
3) Are there bunchs of relabeled PAT# floating around out there as PAFs, and if so is it easy to tell by the sticker itself?

No (unless somebody corrects me)

2) Are there PAFs with slotted brass screws?

Yes

Yes. PAF stickers have a distinctive look (raised letters, gold flecks, greenish edges, font, etc.). See "PAF Identification" off of the Home page for more details.

A harder question is, if the sticker falls off an early Pat# and a late PAF-can you tell the difference? Are there people promoting their 63 Pat#s to PAFs by removing the stickers?

When Gibson closed the original factory a lot of leftover stickers got out. Not to mention all the aftermarket stickers that were made. Dealers would replace patent # stickers to get more $$$ from early 60s instruments.

I would think more dirt bags would do it than dealers!

Yes, there is a difference, generally.
The black lead wires (PAF's only had black) will be coming out from the BOTTOM of the bobbin, NOT the side.
I've owned a Byrdland PAF with the lead wire coming from the side (the sticker proved it)

However, there are ALWAYS exceptions to this rule.
Remember, they didn't care about PAF's, they were no big deal back then and it was production as usual.

Give it to me then. For I say 'a man is no dirtbag if he gives bursts to the kookaburra'.

Oh Tom, I didn't mean you. The dirtbags know who they are. I bet there are a lot of unhappy people out there. Some of the horror stories I have heard. :toobad

I wouldn't want Sandy, although I am flattered you would think of me. I will take that beat old conversion of yours. :dude

Actually one from the bottom and one from the side and same thing goes for early pat#s

OK, here's a further spin on the situation:

Of the 4 or 5 pre-Ttop Pat# pickups that I have with the black and white leads, 3 of them have the original dark coils and 2 of them have the brighter coil wire.

I suppose you all would be telling me that the darker coils are probably going to be better, right?

It is always best, if you decide for yourself, what "sounds better".

Yes, I kind of thought that's what you might say. Of course are there increased odds that the darker wire is probably going to sound better anyway? :)spin
