So I got the itch to try and change/personalize the sound of my R9 and got down the rabbit hole of Alnico Magnets before swapping pick ups.
I love my R9 and picked it because it had the liveliest and spankiest tone compared to the other contenders but over the past year just wanted to see what more I can get from it. I tend to play heavier classic rock and was wanting a bit more umph than the A3 could deliver.
I swapped for unoriented A5 from Throbak and man what a difference. It’s a bigger change than what I was expecting. I’m still readjusting to them but I think they will be keepers.
Bridge pickup gets much thicker and tighter and more authority while stock custombucker was a little thin. Tele like tone when rolling volume below 5 but much more body to the sound than with A3
Neck pickup is warmer and has more mids but still pretty clear (although not quite as clear as the A3 for chords, but leads are smoky and bluesier rather than “pretty” and Chimy”. Rolling volume back to clean keeps a good amount of mids still and is a firm jazzy clean tone rather than loose open airy with top end chime per the A3
Overall I feel it upped the output a good and beefed up the signal amount even though UOA5 is on par with A2 supposedly. It’s better for playing heavier rock n roll songs than the A3 although there are some attributes to the A3 that I miss.
