If there is one book everyone should own it's Kunio's Tone Man which features beautiful pictures of many bursts and more.
Nancy is of course in there:

Wasn't Erhard Bochen doing those "Rare & Vintage" essays? Whatever happened to him?
Nice picture!

Yep, Erhard Bochen used to do these and he did own a music shop together with a guy called "Härle" (Bochen & Härle, Munderkingen) if I remember correctly. At a point in 1986 many prominent staff writers and editors left "Fachblatt" to found a new magazine called "Musiker Magazin" later renamed to "Gitarre und Bass" which is still in existance today.

Erhard Bochen was one of the guys who didn't change over and stayed with the remaining Fachblatt crew until that magazine folded in the 90s.

There is still a "Erhard Bochen Music Market" in Munderkingen so I guess he is still in the retail business. Don't know if he is in the vintage guitar business still though.

Very sad to hear that "Fachblatt" is out of print :-(

It's out of print for 15 years now. They never got over the huge bloodletting when some very prominent authors left and found their own publisher and issued three magazines aiming at the Fachblatt readers. There was Gitarre&Bass, Keyboards and Sticks. This magazines are still alive with Gitarre&Bass being the best selling of the bunch.

There was also a story behind that separation but as there is much dirty laundry involved and the key figure in the plot isn't alive anymore, I shall remain quiet about it.

I used to work as a technical editor for "Keyboards" for nearly 10 years, so I met most of the people there including some of the "Fachblatt"-legends like Gerald Dellmann and Dieter Roesberg. Many of the old editors and writers are still in the business - not necessarily in the writing part of the business though ;)

Well, over all that off-topic chatter of ancient german music magazines I forgot what I actually wanted to say on the topic of this thread:

Erhard Bochen used to present stuff from his own collection in that column in "Fachblatt", sometimes - when he just had no own material to present - he/they would reprint a picture of a different source.

This seems to be the case here. The Mercedes Benz SL in the background was typical for some pictures in "Gitarre&Bass" and "Fachblatt". If I'm not mistaken, these pictures are all reprints of Mac Yasudas first vintage-book from the early 80s. I'm not really sure but I think "Fachblatt" even distributed the book in germany.

Anyway, if this picture was also taken from that book, it might be possible that Yasuda owned this guitar at least at one point.

Hi, Garincha
Thanks for the info. I love all that off-topic chatter of ancient german music magazines:bike
I always thought that the Mercedes Benz' were Erhards' , since he's into cars as well. An old friend of mine who introduced me to Erhard (or Aya, as he was called by many) a million years ago, got a really beautiful blonde '59 335 from him in exchange for a DB convertible. Our band played his Music Club in Munderkingen, using his guitars, amps, etc. Man, he had some very nice gear at his club, including a Burst that belonged to the guitarplayer of the Wailers and a deadmint '62 strat in dakota red, sounded unbelieveable and looked just as good. Aspen Pitman hung out there as well. That was a fun time.
My favorite Rare & Vintage pic from back then was a fiesta red '55 P-Bass with a superflamey maple neck, I would love to see that pic again since its' neck looks so similar to the neck on my old Tele.
Didn't Guitar George do some of the Rare & Vintage stuff as well?

I remember him having more than one store. I thought he main store was in Ulm [or Neu Ulm] and he had another store in Berlin [which I visited with Chef Greg in 1991].
Could the Ulm store actually have been the Munderkingen store? That seems to far from Ulm to be the same. :hmm

I'm not sure where to find it, but there should be more than one.
I believe it carried the [wrong] serial number of 9 1960 for a while, so maybe searching that number [which belongs to a well known Burst: Ruby] will find a thread about this 57 GT that was refinned.
Here's a poor photo of it from the late 70s during one refinish:

The Berlin store near Rathaus Schoeneberg (City Hall of the Schoeneberg district, where JFK gave that famous "Ich bin ein Berliner " speech) was great but he didn't have any Vintage gear there from what I remember. Maybe in the backroom?:hmm

Don't know anything about the (Neu-) Ulm store.

Tom,
Is that the guitar that john Methern of Mobile Alabama had for a number of years?

Tom, the guitar that panhdlce is referring to is the re-finished Goldtop. Yes, John Matherne owned it for several years. I considered buying it, but I didn't care for the thinned neck on it.
