Aparently EBAY is now allowing counterfeit Gibson guitars (A.K.A.Chibsons)

I apologize for double posting this, but I initially posted this in the bayWatch forum, but looks like no one reads it. I wanted more folks to see it.

I was looking for some parts on EBAY last night and I came across at least 10 auctions featuring counterfeit Gibson guitars, some advertised as Chibsons. I this really being allowed on EBAY now??? I reported a few but EBAY has since done nothing.

BTW I reported this to EBAY this morning and the listing are still active...

I can't believe Gibson is not keeping an eye out for this nonsense.

Honestly, I'm not as worried if it's specifically advertised and described as not being a real Gibson.
A fake being sold as a real is where I get worried.

I agree, Ebay is lower than a snake's belly and they would steal Christ off the Cross if they could make so much as a single penny of profit, however given the current circumstances both companies are hurting bad financially and I'm sure that getting in a costly legal battle is the last thing Gibson needs ... hopefully in the future ..

It's a copyright infringement regardless if they say its fake or not. Just like trying to sell a fake Rolex watch. My biggest concern is someone buying these crap guitars and then reselling them as real.

I reported the bogus auctions to EBAY and they have so far done nothing. I also contacted Gibson's legal department for good measure. I'm hoping someone will do something.

I once listed an amp build, had a separate cab/speakers with the brand's chassis.

It was taken down for "Fraudulent Listing." After hours on the phone with some fella who could barely speak English telling me "No Sir, you have Jensen Amplifier, it is not what you say, it says Jensen on it" I finally gave up explaining to him what the chassis was. Then, a week or two later an email giving me permission to re-list.

Yeah, it's a big company, everything is backasswards.

As someone else pointed out, it's still illegal to sell a fake utilizing the trademark of another, even if you say it's a fake.

No marketplace like that has the resources to proactively police fakes.
Ebay will pull an ad if it it has reports about a guitar being fake, but is is utterly ludicrous to expect them to be able to sift through every ad as it is put up with enough qualified staff and see whether it is a fake.

So yes, nothing to see here.

Yesterday I saw an Ebay ad for a supposedly new Custom Shop Les Paul, Gibson on the front of the headstock, Made in USA on the back, seller in Beijing, for $300. Checked out sellers other items, lots of similar fake guitars.

To anyone who’s familiar with real Gibson Les Pauls the pictures clearly gave it away as fake.

I reported it to Ebay, I pointed out why it was obviously a counterfeit, I just had this reply: “We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made by a customer service agent.”

Utterly unethical. Ebay obviously don’t care about counterfeits.

More surprisingly to me, a while back I reported a similar fake to Gibson online, never heard back from Gibson and the Ebay listing wasn’t taken down then either. Maybe Gibson complained to Ebay and Ebay ignored them too?

I loved ebay when it started. They moved toward wanting larger stores and big sellers. What made it great was when it was a giant flea market.

I've had such bad luck with Reverb and eBay over the past year or two, with buyers wanting discounts post-sale, etc. I just trade into GC now.

exactly the same situation I had with eBay recently..kind of a slap in the face when you know something is bogus yet they “determine “ otherwise

Respond to Ebay and tell them you are forwarding the listing and their response to the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center. It's the division of ICE that works investigations into counterfeit goods trafficking.

I’m not sure that a human actually views the reports
