Poor photography skills compounded by the fact that this one looks different with every shade of light as well as the peekaboo flame has never allowed me to get a good shot of this one.

That being said, these came out ok, but still not truly representative.

I know im not the only one here who loves the R9's from these years. Historic accuracy aside, I realized theres good wood from every year but something about these was special. The tops, wether they be plain or flamed, were beautiful and THAT COLOR.
Does anyone know why they cant paint them like that anymore?

Some years ago, I asked Geoff, (the admin) on the old Gibson Custom forum... He said that those guitars had less plasticizers in the lacquer and took longer to cure and so the CS did not continue...

Read into that what you will.

Hmmm....I'm not sure what to make of that. I can understand Gibson messing with the levels of plasticizers in the nitro but what about the actual colors? Gibson has never seemed to be able to get back to that type of red. There are beautiful finishes from all years but none, IMO, that come close to the texture and 3D-ness of the 99/00's.

"Superb combo there brother?....How do you like the Solo Head?"

TRANS AM: Thanks. I am a Mesa fan but I end up using my Marshall more often. The trick with all Mesas is to find a good overdrive to compliment the gain and not run them on 10. The ZW works well with this amp, better than my OCD. Another great pedal is the Holy Grail reverb which works extremely well with this amp.

Sorry for getting off topic. Back to the Y2K's :2zone

GOLD TONE: I am digging that case!! What's the inside look like and where did it come from?

PINEFD: Post that one from the other thread, you have one of the nicest on the block!

Just beautiful.....the reds, browns, yellows and orange shades they used during those years are truly remarkable.
I read somewhere that the guy painting them during 99'/early 00' passed away?

Brandon, I believe you're correct that the guy who did the guitars in the latter part of '99 into '00 passed away. :rip

Wow !
:wow

the top on the one on the right just floors me!!!! Are they stock?

That is stunning!!

Thanks guys! And yes, Brandon, they are all stock. As much as I'd love to change out the inlays on all of them, from a collectability standpoint, I dare not.

Sure, Jr., if you insist (thanks, BTW)! Here's Jesse...again (my '00). Note, I did change the inlays on this one:

Frank, I would have to say your Jessie is in my top 5 all time Killer tops. Of the 16 Historics I have owned (3 of them 1999 R9's) this was the last one to go.

Awesome.....perfect example of how nice the red changes with different angles. How did you get a braz board?

Have any owners of the '99 and '00 R9's had to refret their guitars with regular medium jumbo fret wire? I had my 2000 R9 re-fretted within a couple of years because the tall/narrow (6105) fret wire wore out real fast. It got so bad I couldn't play the guitar.

Why on Earth did Gibson install 6105 fret wire on some of the 2000 R9's? That was the worst feature of my R9. The light brown fret board was the second most annoying feature.

The finish, neck profile, and weight are top notch!

Frank, except for the cool amber color Tom got up around the switch and the slightly wavier flame on yours, this one looks like a bit like a cousin of mine... :jim

Yours is just gorgeous!

Interesting. My Y2K came with the tall narrow frets you speak of as well. But with the HM Braz brd I had them changed out to, I think, 6105s. I seem to recall HM referring to them as 6105s. Whatever they are they play great.

Here's my main squeeze... #9 0456 bought used from Norm's Rare Guitars many years ago, but she was still fairly new at that point. This is the finest Historic Les Paul I have ever had the pleasure to play, or the privilege to own!!! I would love to know who owned her originally and where she came from

Nice top Trans-Am, although it's hard to pick from the beauties here. Mike Slub's 2 are awesome as well, I love "spidey" as I call her.

And Frank - well he's just a gear slut who I'm not speaking to! :)

(Edit:- Frank, you realise of course that I'm just jealous of your collection. There's always many amazing guitars in this type of thread but 9 times out of 10 your contributions have a tendency to stand out! Same goes for Mike S., except he diversifies a bit more than you. Well, until you got your '56 ..... who knows what's next?)
