• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

To me, my 01R8 sounded excellent the day I got it, and having played it amplified and at least weekly since then, any sound change would have been so gradual over such a long period of time that I really couldn't say I've noticed it. But certainly it doesn't sound worse - still just excellent, which is good enough for me.

Mine is older than that. I have 1998 R8 that has been played heavily over the last 10 years---hundreds of gigs and practices. It sounded good when I got it, but now has a sweeter top end than when new. The top end used to be harsher on the bridge pickup, now it is just right to my ears. Also, the neck position tones are clearer, which I'm very happy about.

I'm a firm believer that vibrations over time really enhance the tonal properties of wood. In other words, it gets better the more ya play it.

Yeah I definitely think they change too. The finish has sure gotten harder for one thing. I'd say my 01 R8 is more resonant now, sweeter sounding too. Sustains longer (probably due to the harder finish).

Never thought of it in this way!
I love my 2001 R8, but can't tell if the tone's changed over the years.

I've got two Y2K R9s, the finishes are different from the later models, very thin. The necks are bigger, and the frets feel different. They sound different from the later models, in a good way.

I have a Y2K R9 which I got new. It is definitly more resonant than it was new. It is light as a feather and sounds huge.

Here's a Lemon Burst 2000 R9 that weighs in right around 8 lbs.

This one is also a Y2K R9 and very lightweight. It has an unusual color burst.

My '01 CA R8 still sounds good, but I think it sounded slightly better with new nitro, frets and original BB2/3. I think with all the playing and screwing around with pickups/pots, caps etc. it has lost the original intended sound. How the hell do I know what it sounded like in '02 when I bought it? What a load of crap we discuss on this forum! Yeah Greeny really worried about this shit. Most everybody on here is totally full of it, myself included. I don't want to offend but this is really the biggest pile. People shilling up the price of vintage. Please don't question them they are the experts of God's chosen instrument. Cork sniffing wanking arseholes all of us. I am so sick of this crap. Let's talk music. Oh, I forgot this is about Les Pauls, you have to pay extra to talk about something else. This place was a lot more interesting six or seven years ago. I don't give a shit about top carve, truss rod cover placement, color, western versus eastern, what fucking shithole area of some god forbidden shithole jungle my hog or rosewood came from. Ah but I can perceive slightly more overtones from the '59 than the reissue. Bullshit! Posers all of us! Go fuck your old ladies for christ sake, that's something that has real value.

This one came thru ************ if I remember; the serial is 9 01692, the story I got was it was part of a special run for Yamano that they backed out of, don't know what to beleive these days.
Post a pic of yours.

I emailed a contact at Gibson and he said my LP was part of a small
L-burst batch that went to Daves' in late Dec. 00

The Finish has cured on my 2000 R9. It's a little faded and doesn't have the annoying static electricity snap/crackle/pop noise in the dry winter months anymore. The new finishes have a very annoying static electricity noise when you touch them in the dry winter months, especially where gas heat is used.

How about your ears ? Have they changed since 1998 ?

What about hearing in general, does it become better ?

It's not just the sound, either, it's the value. I bought my '03 for around $1700 a number of years ago. I estimate it now to be worth $200.000.00.
