Ack! Kinda like Fender reviving the Fender Custom (12 string sold as a 6 string) or Ford bringing back the Edsel! :dang:ha

Strange for sure.

Do they have bigger fish to fry with the business side of things or has music crossed some odd threshold where the CES is more relivent to the future in their eye?

The RD has some classic Gibson cred, but not everyone has one. Maybe it will help bring in some new blood to Gibson's.

The next year may be really interesting, hopefully with no horrible meltdown.

There's another thread about Gibson not showing at NAMM next month.
Something strange going on? :hmm

Tom,

I was on the phone the other day with a Gibson dealer (well known in Wichita area) and was seeing the possibility of doing a special order lefty, and he was checking pricelists when another guy in the shop interrupted him and then told me that they are not able to order any Gibsons right now (which didn't surprise me, since I've heard some dealers have to order everything at once at the beginning of the year) but then went on to say that it was out of place for Gibson, and mentioned something about them going bankrupt. It seemed really odd.

That may be complete speculation on their end, but maybe there is something in the air around this, as I've heard more of these types of rumours than usual (which is also a lot, usually:laugh2:). Combined with what we know about their unhealthy financials, maybe something really is going on.

My hope is that this isn't the case, as any American-employing production company I hate to see struggling and/or going under.

Gang, let’s refrain from speculation or second hand comments from third parties who may or may not know what they are talking about regarding Gibson’s status as a going concern. Spreading what most probably is pure rumor/speculation isn’t helpful. Many thanks.

Yep, reissue a failed model with very limited appeal or cred. Smart move. :##:bigal

No disrespect Al but I have to poke the bear here, aren't we on a site for a once discontinued flop, The band Ghost and Fluff from the Beards & Gear video blog have put this oddball back on the map. Some other young guns are running them too, maybe they're not Keef or Jimmy but prices for the originals on Reverb have been going up.

That's OK Thunder. Big Al was applauding them for a stout and visionary business move! Don't let the WTF! fool you. This was Big Al's code to us for him leaving town for the weekend. WTF! means Water The Ficus! He loves that plant so much. It brings a tear to my good eye...We need to put up a Big Al dictionary for the younger members here.

I think a revamped pickguard config and custom colors may enhance the look

The guys using them, are because they are oddball failures and quirky is cool. There is no big demand for originals and nothing to drive a reissue model, which is not a cool quirky original. I know you are a fan of the HM and the oddball guitars that you think should be big sellers, like the Mastodon V, but quirky original resale price is not the same as marketplace reissue demand.

Demand will sustain a reissue Gibson RD and I don't see it. Originals were clumsy, solid Rock Maple guitars in an age of heavyweights, these monstrously heavy guitars were the backbreaking champs.
They should stay in Epiphone land like the Lee Malia version.

That ship has sailed. Ghost are now playing Hagström RD 'knock-offs.'

Gee, no wonder there are rumors. After such luminous releases like the Reverse Flying V and the Holey Explorer not to mention the whole Firebird X thing, I'm not surprised the RD is being reissued. How about a reissue Sonex or Corvus or US1 or Marauder or Challenger or, I could go on... Gibson is fully capable of making wonderful guitars..so why reprise your mistakes? Didn't someone say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result? It's like remarrying your first wife and then remembering why you got divorced in the first place.

I finally got my hands on one of those SG's, it was super fun looking but the neck was laminated too and the layers were too weird feeling so I had to pass. It was like playing a guitar with a corduroy neck.

That one is pretty awesome. For decades, I have been on an exhaustive personal quest to find a guitar whose top was inspired by the opening credits to Ultraman, and -- at last -- there she is. :laugh2:
