So, I really dig all things vintage (except for women

), so I thought I'd create a thread for sharing some Fender advertising from the good old days...

And a personal favorite one, from 1987:

I remember that one. In 1983 I went to a Fender clinic/ product demo in Berlin. They had the Rivera era amps and they were doing give aways. I won a set of strings for "knowing" that the Broadcaster came out in 1948:laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Here are the ads from when Fender launched their first reissues in the early 1980s; I think I scanned both of these from issues of Musician magazine for a Vintage Guitar article I wrote around 2005 or 2006.

Update: I was off by a year or two -- the article I wrote, "Fender's First Reissues," was the cover story of VG in November of 2004. I just found my copy of the issue this afternoon.

Last night my good judgment was not very good. In the future I'll keep the discussion on the topic of GUITARS. Thanks for posting the old ads, I actually remember some of those ads when they where new, brings back some memories. Play on.

I wonder if Fender's advertising in the 60s was done in house or at an agency.

I'm picturing a room with men in suits and drinks all around and a guy pitching the line "You won't part with yours either."

From that last link:

Robert Perine was raised in Los Angeles in a very artist family. At the age of six his father drew his portrait and asked young Bob to do the same, “it was like magic and from that time on I knew I wanted to be an artist.” After enlisting in the US Navy during World War II, Bob studied at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles for four years. He then moved to Orange County, where he opened an advertising and graphic design shop and soon was hired by Fender Guitars to create their ad campaign. Over the years Bob won several awards for his creative and successful advertisements for the Fender products. Among the most noted ads he created were the series that ran on the back cover of Downbeat magazine for much of the early 1960s. One of these ads featured a surfer playing his Fender on the waves, another showed a sky diver holding on tight to his guitar while free falling from 15,000 feet. Bob’s role in the early days of the success of Fender had often gone unnoticed because he was never a company employee; however his work has often been credited for the fame the company achieved over the years. NAMM was proud to have interviewed Bob for our Oral History program on November 17, 2003. Mr. Robert Perine passed away at the age of 81.

So not exactly a Mad Men-style Madison Avenue campaign, but not in-house, either. But Don Draper would have happily taken credit for creating an ad campaign that perfectly matched -- indeed, enhanced -- the client's products as well as its design and lifestyle ethos.

My strat came with a price list when I bought it a couple years ago.

If there is any interest, I can take more pictures of it. I have the original case in the back of the closet so it would take some work to get to. I bought a new fender case to carry the guitar around in as the old one is rather fragile.
