• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I don't know if I'd say it's an "iconic" Norlin... but I caught April Wine on Friday. Brian Greenway was playing a Norlin era Les Paul Custom. I was right in front of the stage and it was very apparent that it was a pancake body Les Paul. It sounded very good through a Wizard amp.

yeah very cool pic of 73; seems to be an outdoor show, which i think was very rare

maybe it was their show in cadillac michigan in support of the local football team but i think that was 75

so what was that outdoor show in 73?

I hate Norlin guitars. I wouldn't use one for a jackstand.

That is quite a statement!
If you had said you hate 70's Les Paul you might have found me nodding in agreement but you hate the whole Norlin period?????
I would say they produced some really nice guitars after 1980. The pre-Historic that Mark Knopfler uses on (the track) Brothers in Arms is one of the greatest Les Paul sounds of all time. I am sure you know that Mark Knopfler now uses a 'Burst (in concert) to recreate the astonishing sound of that particular Norlin. :)

Yeah, the Caddy/football show was in '75.

Good question, on this shot, though. :hmm
Man, I had EVERYTHING I could get my hands on tacked to my bedroom walls AND the ceiling!,
an' I can't recall a single thing being outside/daylight, concert-wise. :hmm

that les paul deluxe must have been quite new when the pic was taken

and already routed for humbuckers, it can't be a 69 deluxe since (i think) they were goldtops so maybe 72

How do you know they are not early 69's?

What if it were? Are you claiming that a guitar built before any of the Norlin specs and changes, a guitar built to exact CMI specs, by the same CMI employees on the same machines with the same materials, are? REALLY, that's yer big point?

BIG Al come on give me a break ! I mean we're talking about a span of maybe one year or so between Gibson and Norlin specs. Same people and materials out on the floor. Frankly I don't give a shit. I don't get off splitting hairs. It's a cool guitar regardless of whether it was shipped in 68 or 69.

Go here for definitive information....

The Les Paul guitars must have been fairly "iconic" in the 1970's. Gibson shipped over 35000 Les Paul Deluxes' in the 1970's. Over 52,000 Customs' were shipped during the same period.

I'll put my 1970 Deluxe up against anything built today.

Whoa, Marshall1987 don't take offence, none intended, OK? I'd have used an appropiate smiley but I post from my Playstation and can't always get the full functions.

Still that posted question is splitting hairs.

I have a much loved early 70's Goldtop like yours, but not near as pretty. I had to put P90's in mine, but the minies were spectactular, MO. Greatly, greatly underrated. When Ricky, Gretch, Kay, ect.. pu are getting a buzz, SUPERIOUR Mini hums are ignored. What a shame, no need to preach to you I see.

All's cool Al. I should have started a Tom Scholz Les Paul Goldtop appreciation thread instead of posting on this one. The overtones of Norlin hate struck a discordant note with me. :2cool
