I feel this is too much of a blanket statement.

He gets more realistic credit for popularizing Les Pauls in general, rather than Bursts.
It wasn't until Nov 1988 that he got his first Burst.

Man…to think in '63 there were unsold Bursts in music stores looking to clear 'em out for peanuts….
Growing up in the 80's, my teacher had (and still has) a 1960 Les Paul, so I was introduced to the 'lore' of it from others who knew he had it. But I also always associated it with Billy Gibbons, even though he had all those wacky guitars.

All the rest of us saw was a Gibson logo. Young kids don't know the difference.
