• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Let's hear it for the Les Paul Studio!

Was wondering if anyone could help me with upgrading my 1998 Studio. Wondering about upgrading the wiring, pots, hardware, etc...

This guitar resonates like crazy and has a great feel. I do not like the stock pickups so I'm going to change them out. But just wondering about hardware. Also, I love the look of the tuners(Kluson style),. but these have a hard time staying in tune. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Those tuners are fine, if you like the look you should keep them. Tuning problems usually start at the nut. Best to try some graphite in the nut slots. If that helps, you probably need just a little filing of those slots.

Again, hardware is generally good (except maybe the 3 way switch?). But I went with a nickel ABR bridge and tailpiece just for the look of it. Also added conversion ferrules on the headstock, again just for looks.

Thanks for the reply! Guess I'm just gonna swap pickups. :dude:

How is the fake binding done? - looks great!
John

hi John,
I sanded the edges and polished them. It´s a little bit tricky, you only have "one try", but it´s makeable.

Looks like a totaly different guitar now. :wah

Its an older thread but I'm new here, so I thought I'd say Hello and post a pic of my Studio.
It took me a while to get used to it since its an ebony board and all my others are rosewood but I've grown fond of it. Only changes are the vol pots were swapped to 500K. The guitar is a 2009.

I'm planning on polishing my Studio Tribute. How did you manage to polish the headstock without damaging the lettering?

Here is a Vintage Mahogany Studio headstock with extra nitro shot over the decals and then polished up.

, This is my second post, first being an intro. I am an old player, playing for 54 yrs, 45 yrs as a professional. Due to a bad back, I quit playing LP's decades ago. I recently bought a 2008 Studio Fireburst w gold. I got it at a great price and it is in near mint condition, so I am a happy camper. I have a couple of questions that I am sure some of you folks that are more experienced at these newer models, features/appointments etc can answer for me. I know the pickguard is aftermarket but is close in color, so I am ok with that.
1) Notice the bridge & tailpiece and notice the two locking Allen screws. Is this a aftermarket or did Gibson put these on Studios in 2008? Is it a Tone Pro or what brand and model?
2) Notice the strap lock. Is it a Dunlop or what brand? Did Gibson install these on Studios in 2008, or is it aftermarket? I'm asking because I need to buy the mate for my strap.
Also for those of you who are into stats; most folks say the studios should weigh 7.5lbs. This one weighs 8lbs. I can't see the pickguard causing the extra 1/2 lb of weight. Can anyone comment on the weight issue? This is the reason I bought the newer one. A crippled spine chased me away from LP's decades ago. This one is a great guitar and despite what people say about the weight vs sustain; this one screams with sustain, sounds great on all PU combinations, plays great and has very good unamplified tone(primary tone), which is important. Thanks in advance for not beating up on me for not knowing about the newer models, features etc. It sure is confusing and worse than the car business with all the different models etc. I'm so old I can remember when there were only two or three LP models and they were way more reasonably priced. If the pictures don't show up let me know. I'm a virgin at photobucket!! Thanks again

Help; What am I doing wrong? When I click on the URL, it cannot find anything. THe link code does not seem to be doing anything either. I apologize. I tried but know nothing about photobucket. The second link seems to work on my end. Thanks

That probably is a Tone-Pros bridge and stopbar. I don't think they are from the factory but they do work well. I have a Tone-Pros bridge on mine. Strap lock is probably aftermarket as well and I don't think you can buy just the other half so Just get what you want and if it is a match you just have some spare parts.

As far as weight, mine is a 2007 and weighs 8.5 lbs.

Thank you sir. I did not think that Gibson installed Tone Pros on Studios of any year. Does it look like the intonation screws are proper? By that I mean in the front near the rear pickup? I've never seen a tunomatic type bridge like that. The screws were always in the rear towards the tailpiece. Looks kinda strange to me, but that's the way it was when I bought the guitar. I think the strap locks are Dunlop from what the catalog pictures look like. If anyone can add to this, please chime in. Thanks again
