I have gotten quite a few inquiries about the time line for the upcoming ThroBak MXV P90's so I thought I would give an update.
Last week I took delivery of the reproduction soap bar baseplates I had tooling made for. Like all of these old Gibson Kalamazoo parts it had to be custom made in order to get it to correct vintage specs.. I had a 55' P90 baseplate lab tested and made the repros out of the same 1/2 hard brass formulation and also had them matte tin plated just like the vintage baseplate sent for testing.
Below is a photo if the finished soap bar baseplates. I'm very happy with how they came out. They look exactly like the original vintage baseplate sent to copy, but the without the tarnish on the tin plate. The tarnished tin plate of the vintage part even has the same powdery look that these repros have but grayed by tarnishing. The tin plate can be polished but really I wanted to keep the raw rough look of the original vintage P90's as well as make sure the metal and plating was correct for the period as it does have some impact on the tone of the pickup.
For the rest of the P 90 MXV parts I have already done a test run of Styrene bobbins and will have the tooling for Butyrate covers (ala mid 50's soap bars) done in the next few months. All of the parts are tooled, stamped and molded for ThroBak in the USA.
