• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Some simple questions...

Who has tried the big sized strap buttons like the ones featured on Duane's burst, and where can I get some?

Do they successfully do the job as "strap locks"? It seems to me that those big buttons would be a good alternative to normal strap locks, and they look cool :dude

Not sure 'bout Duane's, but PRS actually uses the Fender bass string trees as oversized strap buttons.

They aren't strap locks per se but they are actually fender washers you can buy at the hardware store for about .40. They go over the strap and are screwed in to the guitar. I have them on my LP and they work fine. The strap isn't going anywhere.

Here's a surefire straplock system that you can have fun with at the same time - I use the rubber washers that come from Groelsch beer bottles. They're tight, won't slip or come off while playing and are easily removed. My original prototype is a piece of inner tube that has been cut to the size of roughly a quarter. The hole is cut just big enough to allow the button to fit through, but you have to work it a little to remove it. It's by far and away the best thing I've ever used. If an old inner tube isn't available, the washer from the beer bottle is the next best thing....plus you can enjoy the beverage. And, with it being rubber, it'll fit nearly any guitar you own. There's no harm to the finish of the guitar or marring of the strap, either.
I found this trick after my ES-5 had a little accident one night in '01. Nothing like tragedy to work as a motivator, eh? I've had the same one on the ES-5 ever since and it still works as well as the day it was placed on the rear button.

Just put on some Schallers or Dunlops. No reason to risk that guitar falling.

Why is it I can only find Grolsch beer with pop off tops? :bonk Anyone care to drink a couple extra and send some washers my way? :jim

Dunlop makes these little plastic oversized guitar pick shaped dealies that go over the strap butting and you lock it on, it prevents the strap from coming off and you can keep your baby stock. I use em....so far..so good.

I tried them and they strip pretty easily. Nothing works like that rubber piece! All you do is place it on the outside of the strap after it's on the guitar. No modifications, no extra parts, no worries!

Stew Mac also sells a plastic disc that you just place over the strap and button and twist. Works great. I've got 6 sets.

You can buy the gaskets here:

LINK TO GROLSCH GASKETS

...Scroll down to Grolsch Gaskets...

I am going to order 25 (They are only $2.50). I can report back how they are if anyone cares to know.

Every one of those that I had all broke within the first usage. I still have 4 sets here wrapped in plastic that I'll never use. Believe me, I've tried 'em all over 20+ years, Schaller, Straplok, Stew-Mac, Dunlop, etc., and there's nothing that even comes close to the rubber disc.

I used the gasket thing. Worked perfectly on my gretsch but did not work at all on the LP. I use the plasic dunlop strap lock. I chose a very tight pair and it is MUCH better that the grolsh gasket. YMMV.

Yeah, but there's no telling how those gaskets might mess up your tone....

I could have bought the "vintage gaskets", but they were $2500.00 a dozen.

why order 25 and not 26? 25/2=12.5 while 26/2=13, the whole number being (imho) better suited for the guitar usage.
