My R9 darkburst came to me a little... dark. I've been leaving it in a sunny room and the top seems to be fading already... which is what I want it to do.

My question (s) are ... is Gibson using the same type of dyes they did in the old days, or are the colors lightfast and non-fading?

I swear the top on my guitar looks lighter! :dude

btw... the guitar was made in August of this year.

Thanks!

Yes, the top will fade some, but not anywhere like the originals did, my '01 R9 has faded a little but not as much as I would like it to. The back will fade very quickly, I've actually seen a difference in just a few hours.

Unless theyve recently changed things, the top wont fade as fast as the back. They only use the old type of dye on the back. The top will take much longer than the back.

Any Precautions?

Any cautions if I start to sit my 2000 R9 in the sun to fade the back in terms of changing the angle, way it's sitting so the fade is even over the back, sides, and neck etc.?

Does it just fade or does it start to turn brown as well?

finishes

Jim: seems like my guitar is getting a little more brown on the back. I use it onstage a little bit and the neck is already quite a bit lighter than the rest of the back.

These guitars seem to have a pretty thin finish on them... which is good. Maybe that's part of the reason it sounds so good.

In another year or so it's going to have that "aged by Murphy" look... without paying the extra $$. :lolspin
