Sorry for all those who wanted to hear more about the Philly Guitar show in my first post, and only got some snot grass talking about his new guitar. Ok well, I'm going to tell you right up front Part II is going to be similar to part I. So you can stop reading right here. Or can you?
But well it really is too much for the senses to take in unless you been in the business doing it for a long time, IMHO.
I got the LPspecial home and it suddenly made my Fender Tele Jr redundant. And I couldn't picture myself picking up the Tele Jr again. So my devious mind started to work on itself. What can you do with the tele Jr? The obvious answer? Trade it in. Trade it in on what? Well the guitars at the show are still in town, but only for one more day folks. But I'm gonna need more to trade for what I have in mind. Hmm, ok I'll take the Ernie Ball Music Mann Super Sport, cause I also can't see myself wantin to play that much anymore either. Wierd, I did not predict the effect the LP special would have on my psyche, or on the fate of my poor other guitars.
Hmmm, my credit is good, and the wife is asleep on the couch with a cold, sneeked (snuck?) the 2 guitars out but left an semi-honorable note saying went to trade in my guitar at the guitar show. This way I will be able to actually walk through the front door with a new guitar (ok so the mind doesn't think clearly in these circumstances).
Same first stop as yesterday. Guitar Villa, but I have my sights set on the flametop Reissue instead of the Plaintop. So I show my wares but the dealer is not in the least interested. "Can't sell a tele jr, not close enough to Nashville". Ok, I got to head more southwesterly in my searches I think. Well, another promising looking Tele dealer is too busy to talk to me, one guy doesn't want to pay as much as I want for the Super sport. Its not going well...until I go over and talk to Dave of Dave's guitar shop. He doesn't like what I'm asking either but he comes up some when I tell him that I want to trade for one of his guitars. Then he gives me a pretty fair price. So I start lookin in the shop windows.
The PRS's look nice but I have been "brainwashed" at the Les Paul Forum. So I check out all the nice 01' R59 and 58 reissues and Authentics. The nicest top there IMHO is #9 1882, 8.6 lbs and its the highest priced one there too at $4500. But I can't quite swing that, not on top of yesterdays purchase.

The next one I like the most, and the one I got was #9 1300 a nice cherry burst 8.5lbs and priced at $3700. It is "used" but you can't tell by lookin at it. According to Dave, it was previously owned by Rob Peterson who is a friend of forum member Rich Conte. The picture is still out at Dave's until he pulls it. I've got to say now after playing it for the last 4 hours (hard to put down) that Rob you have great taste in guitars thanks a whole bunch for tradin this one in. It is a real musical instrument, actually its an animal, a tiger or something. I see now that I have indeed been missing something by not owning one of these. Beautiful tone and I found myself playing stuff I have never played before. The neck is huge and adds to the stability of the guitar and the wood resonates, there are great harmonics etc etc, and sustains for days.. I played some Martin Bear stuff that I would not have even attempted on another guitar, I definitely play differently, depending on the guitar I'm playing. I also picked up an old 70's Cry Baby Wah that sounds great with the lp's.
Ok, enough of me here is some more of what Dave had in the LP department.
He seems to have an LP for everyone, I mean his customs and stardards were nice too.
But this is the Historic section...

They had a new 2001 1960 reissue that would have been my 3rd choice judjing by top only also 8.5 lbs and $3295.
Dave also had 3 nice 58's all priced at $3395 one was an authentic # 1271, #1271 is 9lbs, #1303 is 8.8lbs.
Gold tops? The Dicky Betts GT with dark back 9.4lbs $5450.
An aged 57 $3850. Regular GT 57' $2295. A 56' authentic $2395 and a 54' $2295.
Phew! What a week-end,
Sincerely, Now Solid Semi-solid R9r
in Les Paul heaven.

P.S. Dave Praetow..Mike wasn't freaked

When I was buying #9 1300, I did say hello to Mike Steele, and he seemed like a real nice guy. Said you guys go way back. And are always hunting down LP's.

But.... he wasn't freaked out. ;)

Thanks for the interesting report

Well done. Enjoyed your report. Wish there were more like yours since I am not close to the cities where these fests are held.

Yeah, that 01-59 was an animal, it was just one of those that left gibson right on the money, the tone on that thing is killer. I don't think it has 2 hours on it, so with a little play-in time that thing is going to be scary.

If so how did you make out with it.:dude

Yeah, Rob had to lose two R9s to get that quilt R9, but its a non aged brazilian board R9, so it was damn expensive. It does sound real good, and plays great, so he's happy. Rob's tastes are different from mine, thats for sure.

Any good flying V's at the show?

I saw one with gold plated parts that looked like a million bucks,
but a flying V would look really silly on me, with my pot belly and all.:lolspin

Well my wife's reaction was like, ok.

Which I was kind of amazed at. Last time I walked through the door with a new one (the Music Man) she looked quite peeved.

Well anyway, I played the R9 tonight and was able to get a better feel for the neck and everything. Its the smoothest playing guitar I've ever played, and that includes the R9 335.
The reviewer in 20th Century (Jag) is right the R9 335 is very different than the R9 les paul. A very precise guitar that requires more finess from me, and I'm hearing things I never heard before. If my finger is at the wrong angle on the finger board, stuff like that. . But I am amazed with this guitar. The 335 is definitely more laid back. I'm more likely to loose my hearing with the LP.

The neck on the Les Paul Special is more like the thin taper kind like on an SG. So I held my ear up to the body of the 1960 Les Paul Special and did an open string strum and it sounds like a piano with a kind of low throbbing throttle sound of a Harley Davidson. Amazing!

Did the same ear thing with an open strum on the R9 and its pretty similar to the lp special, the Harley Davidson throb wasn't quite as strong but there was a higher mid sound kind of like a propeller of an airplane in the distance. Lots of great sounds in both these guitars. Alot of my playing in the past was on an acoustic guitar or semi-hollowbody electric, so I was a little skeptical of solid bodies. I never new solid body guitars could have so much tone, and these are TONE MONSTERS.
