• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

I agree with you guys (gals), Mick would have been great in The Stones.

I also prefer his solo stuff, even though he did some great work with Bowie, whom, like you BP, I couldn't get into Bowie after Mick left.

With respect to his first two solo albums (which I happen to really like), IMHO, I think he was trying to establish himself as singer (I happen to like his voice). Again though, IMHO, there's some great guitar work on there too.

Definitley.

I know they get compared and I dunno about you, but I prefer Ronson to Beck……..!!!!
I love Beck, but I agree with you!

And MB, I also happen to like his singing (Empty Bed...). I don't know why his solo stuff never took off.

Not the track by J.C.Mellencamp! He was involved in that? That's a f*%@ing great song

The very same, whilst Mick worked with Mellencamp on his American Fool album (they shared 'Mainman' history) Mellencamp decided to ditch the song J&D, Mick worked on it all thru the night and created a masterpiece, from the intro to the choral bridge, the rest is history (that's Mick on lead and acoustic) On the downside it took 26 years for Mick to get the credit he was due - was his concerned, not in the least, that was the type of bloke Mick was.

It took me almost as long to get Mick's recognition on the songs Wikipedia page

Bowie after Mick, still loved the dude, David continued to hire some fine guitarists, Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick ('Station to Station') being particular favourites

Excellent example of his vocals right there! How about "Seven Days", one of the extra tracks released on the CD of "Play Don't Worry"? Nice range right there!

Mick talks about Mellencamp not crediting him for his work briefly during the interview on "Show Time". Doesn't seem bitter at all. In fact, if I remember right, he mentions how good of a guy Mellencamp is.

Oh and don't forget Frampton. Frampton credit Bowie for him getting recognized as a Guitarist once again.

Bowie did hire good talent but I felt that Gabrels and…..er, that other bloke were just noise merchants. Not SRV, I don't mean him. They never had the melodic gift that Ronson had.

You're absolutely right! Ronson was a very melodic player, very similar in that respect to Frampton. I guess that's why there two of my absolute favorites of all-time.

Artist and life long friend of David's George Underwood (and all round nice fellow) was the school friend who left David with faulty depth perception and a permanently dilated pupil after a schoolyard scrap over a mutually admired beau.

George's artwork for David includes 'David Bowie' (aka 'Space Oddity') 'Hunky Dory' and 'TRAFO Ziggy Stardust ATSFM' (and the David produced Mott album 'All The Young Dudes')

Some of George's artwork featuring a number of the artists mentioned in this thread - including the Spider from Mars himself...

Peter Frampton and David, although they went to the same school, they never knew each other (3 years apart) the connection was Peter's father Owen, who was David's art teacher.

David is credited with saving Peter's career (Peter's own words) after he was offered the 'Never Let Me Down' album and subsequent 'Glass Spider' tour

I've heard of him. The Ronson one reminds me of BOC's "Fire of Unknown Origin" cover but I don't think he did that one?

Are they oil? I like the Keith one. Very different from my approach to the same subject!

I might try one of Ronno if I ever get time - he had amazing features - very sculpted, what cheekbones!!??

Yes, great singing on that one! The last half of "I'm the one" is another good example!

Frazettafan: I agree he had a great look for the whole rockstar thing, more so than anyone else I know of. If you make a painting it would be cool if you threw up a pic :)

If I'm not mistaken, Frampton has said he knew Bowie while in school? As Bhoodog stated, he does credit Bowie with resurrecting his career as a Guitarist.

I concede that David probably knew of Peter as his art teacher father was a big influence on David, but not as a budding musician (or beau contender) :)
