• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

Hey guys,
I just revisited this fantastic blues rhythm masterclass by Robben Ford, in which he plays Larry Carlton's 1957 Goldtop:

Robben also mentions it in this Vintage Guitar interview https://www.vintageguitar.com/3401/ and plays it together with Larry on a couple of shows: youtube]EIQ356f_EtI

Boy, what a great looking, well worn Les Paul! Does anyone have more information on it? It seems Robben used it for quite a while maybe 20 years ago, but I haven't seen or heard about it since. Is it still with Larry Carlton? Are there some more close-up pictures or known recordings available?

LC's goldtop was a 56 P90 converted to humbuckers.
Ahh, very interesting, thanks! The guitar above is referred to as a '57 in the Vintage Guitar interview, but it has a low logo so it might be the '56 conversion you mention?!
Do you know anything else about it?

So through some more digging I just found out this is apparently a 57/57 conversion (from P90s to humbuckers). The humbuckers are supposeldly Jim Rolph's.
Larry bought the guitar in 94 from no other than Keith Richards, but sold it again in the late 2000s...
Here is another video of him playing it:

The horn on the right guitar looks bobbed
