PAFs

Toni, I have been thinking of trying the DiMarzio Virtual Humbuckers. When you use overdrive, are they a smooth sound, or more harsh, like the 498T?

Toni, you bad influence

I guess, a good influence really. I know that soon I will try either the Antiquities or Virtual PAFs, but cannot decide which. From your soundfile a couple weeks ago, I prefered the Antiquity neck, and the Virtual bridge.

Maybe I will break all the rules and mix Dimarzio and SD's in the same guitar. I hope it doesn't make the guitar explode.:lolspin

Blueswoman,

Virtuals are VERY SMOOTH ! so i had to set the height of both pickups very low ( maybe one turn below the plastic ring at the center portion of the arc), if i set the height at the normal height, the become too smooth and muddy. They are pretty strong and They are VERY sensible to height.

Al,

hee hee... i've been "badly" influenced by Big Al...:bonk
I would not mix those pickups.
I think the best tone i got was with the Antiquities. BUT, If you want a richer and fuller tone (better spectrum), you just have to set the height of the pickups even with the plastic rings AND raise the 6 polesecrews 1 turn up, and Whooooo ! they change their personnality ! much much better than the soundsfile i did two weeks ago...so the brigde pickup will reach the mid's complexity of Virtuals PLUS a more solid feel, moore woody without becoming harsh.

Hee hee, I'm running that in my lemon burst right now, cream duncan distortion in the bridge, and a regular cream dimarzio paf in the neck. I felt like putting on a flack jacket as I was wiring in the dimarzio, but nothing happened! The frigging dimarzio actually sounds pretty good in there, and I usually HATE frigging dimarzios.

Blueswoman- the virtuals sound nothing like the 498, not harsh at all. What IS cool about them is that they feel strong, but don't sound it, so you get the playing dynamics as if it was a strong pickup, but they sound smooth. real nice. I use them in high gain, and they still sound great, and I'm usually NOT a fan of weak pickups.

Toni, when Dan Erlewine worked on one of my guitars (EdR's) he adjusted all the polepieces according to the radius that he set the bridge at. That is the way I've set up both of my p/u's and they sound great! I set the neck polepieces at 14" and the bridge at 15" radius with great results;)
