I just put a new Historic SG/Les Paul Custom on layaway at Mars Music. Seemed like a great deal - $1599 including the Gibson case. It's in the usual white with gold trim and has the three pickup configuration with a stop tailpiece. I've been thinking about picking up an SG for several years, but just hadn't run onto what I thought was the right deal.
My preliminary thoughts: really nice guitar, plays very well (like most Gibson Historics), and the pickup configuration gives your some interesting tones. For those not familiar with the three pickup configuration, the middle position is a middle and bridge combination that gives you a pseudo-strat sound. Seemed interesting in the store. The neck is a slim-taper type; normally I prefer really fat necks, but this one didn't bother me. I hadn't considered this particular model (it's a bit more fru-fru looking than I usually prefer), but it seemed hard to pass up. Plus, Jimi played one on occasion! I'll probably pick it up within the next thirty days - can't wait.
Despite the knocks Gibson takes (often justified), I've sure had great experiences with them. I've got a nice collection of recent Gibsons built up:
'57 Historic GT RI LP
1982 Leo '59 RI Sunburst LP
'57 Historic RI LP Jr
'59 Historic RI ES-335
ES-175
Firebird V RI
and now the SG/LP Custom!
These are all wonderful guitars that play extraordinarily well and sound fantastic. What fun!
