FWIW, regardless of how it looks in that photo, it's well documented that when #1's bridge pup was replaced the new pup had indeed a chrome cover, not nickle. There are other photos out there where the visuals are clearer.

Well, that picture to MY eyes looks like it was taken before any pickups were changed. Even in a shitty picture it's easy to spot a chrome cover and none of those covers in THAT picture are chrome. I know what went on with the guitars later but my comment was directed at the picture posted in this thread.

The original PAF had its cover taken off in... what... 1970? '71?... revealing double white bobbins. This was replaced in... I dunno... '73?... by the T-top. He only acquired #2 in '75, so I'm pretty sure the T-top would have been in that guitar when that photo was taken... so whatever cover came with a T-top is what you see in that picture. It definitely has less wear than the neck pickup cover, which is unusual, wouldn't you say?

Couldn't he have used the PAF's cover on the T top? That way it would match the neck pup. Why put a chrome cover on with a nickel cover? Also, do we really know when the white PAF was replaced? The only thing I have heard is 1970s. That could have been after #2 was puchased in 1975. I also heard that the PAF's cover was on, off and back on again.

Well, it could be that he gave much less of a toss about this stuff than we do. I'd say that's fairly likely, as he was quite busy being a rock god at the time.

Who really knows?

Err... hang on...

I think the answers to all this may be in here somewhere:

I'm gonna throw my .02 and I think the bridge pup looks like chrome with some pick sratches on the lower end. I think it is chrome and looks different from the others....but what do I know.

The white PAF was uncovered in November '69 (11/4/69 to be exact). It stays that way until the end of the February '72 Australian tour. Sometime shortly after the tour ended the pickup failed. It was replaced with a chrome covered pickup (which we all believe was the T-Top) which shows up for the two warmup gigs in May '72 and then of course for the '72 North American Tour. It stays that way until '86 or '87 when it's taken off and we see a double black pickup. Go through pics and you'll clearly see it's chrome... I can't believe that's even being debated.

God forbid that we're not all as well versed in our Page history as we should be! I can't believe any of us wasted any readers time debating something like this. :wank

Typical of this place as of late.

Maybe I should just put a chrome (nickel?) cover on this one to cover up the incorrect black bobbin and make it look more like the pic above?

What exactly do you mean when you say that it failed? Needed a new magnet? A wire shorted out? I am wondering why he did not have it repaired. I have heard that he still has the pup & there was a rumor that it was going to be repaired & put back in the guitar.

Not sure why you're taking my comment so seriously or personally...

It broke, quit working, what exactly happen who knows. It was probably easier to have it replaced than repaired. I heard the story about the pup still existing... wouldn't surprise me, one of the popular interviews out there on Page's gear mentions a drawer full of PAFs or something, was probably tossed in it.

I am really curious to know how this bridge pickup will sound. Why couldn't you get somebody like Jim Rolph to make a double creme pickup to the same specs as this new Gibby treble PU? I'm really interested in this guitar but the double black bobbins are annoying; certainly not a deal breaker. I'd probably go the "add a cover" route to make things right in my mind. I'm hoping these necks will be more along the lines of an R0.

Does anyone know how the pick guard switches are affixed to the guard? Glue, velcro, etc.?

They don't appear to be attached by any type of threaded mechanism like a pot shaft or a bolt, for example.

My guress is they are glued or bonded to the pickguard in the same fashion that a 335 bracket gets attached to its pickguard.

There was a post in the Sunburst Pub about somebody offering something just like that - plastic covers for your pickup bobbins to make them different colors.

It may have been me that mentioned them in a thread where someone was talking about wantin the zebra look but really liked thep'ups he had in.

There's a product called bobbin toppers that I saw someone had used over at HC on a classic. They really looked good even close up. He was a hard gigging punk so I'd guess they're durable

http://www.universaljems.com/cart/bobbin.htm

$2 each
