• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

HISTORIC? It's still a LP, right?

I mean, isn't EVERY LP made after 1960 a HISTORIC in some sense?
Unless it's a new configuration of wood, parts, and placement, it's
based on some sort of LP that came before it.

Each year they got further and further away from the specs that
made a Les Paul desirable and gradually evolved back again to the beginning ... kinda " Back to the future " .... Same thing with PAF's
when they realised that what they were making was so far from a
PAF that it almost had no business being called an original anymore!

I bought my first LP in 1974 and there was no talk of REISSUE to it.
It was a STANDARD in Tobacco sunburst with not much flame to it at all.
I think the top was 3 piece, maybe even 5 - I mean nothing special.
Matter of fact, except for the rare LP, nice flame or wood grain hardly
ever seen. Compared to my 1986 LP Studio with bounded body & neck
and possible Shaw pups...my 1974 Standard was about average.
A great LP for 1974 but nothing like some of the recent LP's I've played.
(Was that because it was in those...eh, NORLIN years?)

Are you talking about Custom Shop REISSUES only then?

Reissues refer to Les Pauls made by the Custom Shop. They are closer spec-wise to the originals though there are still a quite a few differences. The main differences between the USA Production models and Custom Shop are quality of wood, long tenon neck joint, neck angle, top carve, non-weight relieved body, more PAF-ish Burstbucker pickups. Of course there are a lot more differences, some cosmetic... some not.

Vic what "information" have you gained ?

"Having played guitar since 1968 and owned LP's and SG's since
1974 (and other guitars), I frequent both forums (and some others)
to gain as much information as I can. My style on one forum to another
will vary depending on the vibes of the forum itself and my relationship
with that forum. What is considered good humor on one forum is frowned
upon another and my posts are (hopefully) respectful and reflective of that.

Just like with any forum, there are those who feel their "GUITAR" is the
"BEST" and over at ETSG, some of us LP owners take some heat for it
but it is all in good fun. Notice my avatar at ETSG and LPF is me playing
live with my #1 - a beautiful 1986 Les Paul Studio w/ SHAW pups.

Concerning my "HISTORIC" posts, my questions were genuine."

The words "reaction" and "over" spring to mind... not necessarily in that order.

Both here, and in the SG forum. All taking ourselves a bit too seriously, dont you think...?

Chill guys....

Nobody here is fooling themselves. Historic Reissues are not the same as 50's Les Pauls. However, I've found them to be much better in the tone, feel and quality dept than the regular production models. I've owned 3 USA Standards and 4 R9 Historics. The Historics winm hands down. I'm not some rich dude with nothing better to spend his money on, to buy these nice guitars requires me to sacrifice other nice things I could have in my life. In the end it comes down to what you the individual prefer, can afford and can be happy with.

The labels 'historic' and 'reissue' are pretty clear. I don't understand the need to come here and stir up trouble.
