What is being used or not used to achieve that flat/dull finish on the authentics? Are they just not buffing out the top? & lastly how can this be achieved with a top that is already buffed out? Thanks!

Howie,
What they are doing is skipping the second and third buffing wheels that bring out the shine.
In other words, they are doing LESS work and charging more for the guitars!

As far as making a shinny guitar dull..............classes are Thursday night!:lolspin :lolspin

Just kidding......... I really don't know

Murphy uses a heat gun to dull his finishes, from what I've been told. I know I sure wouldn't want to experiment on a $3k guitar! It almost looks like Gibson wipes something on the guitars, some of them look that way. I know they aren't buffed out too much.

Yeah I'm not real keen on the heat gun idea.....If I had the resources & skill to fix my mistakes...no problem, but I don't. The couple of Authentics I've looked at DO look like something has been WIPED on them & that is exactly what I was referring to. If anyone comes across this process please make a post of it. Looks like I'm just gonna have to do it the old fashioned way.......play the hell out of it! :wail:

You probably won't need it, the amount of playing you do on it. I know mine doesn't ;)
After only a few months, mine displayed the same wear patterns, discolorations, and fading that 60burst's did. I suspect yours might soon too.
You might think about trying it on the back, or some other inconspicuous place. If you like it there, then you can move to other places. Personally, i don't see a need for it.
