Help with a purchase

So I have decided to save up and by a real Gibson Les Paul. After doing some checking around I have decided on a Les Paul Standard, either 50's or 60's. I don't want anything with weight relief. I want to get as close to the real deal of what a Standard is. So now I am looking for some advice from the pros here on this forum. I also want it to be a burst. I'm thinking a Traditional is out but want to be sure. So any and all advice is appreciated. I'll let everyone know when I finally get it.

My advice is.. don’t rush your choice.. their are many options and price points to consider.. the current USA standard range is a good choice as they’re very well made and affordable, especially on the used market. If you wish to dive in at the deep end.. consider a used R8/9..or above that the historic range (2015/16/17/18), as this imo.. would be as close as you’ll get to “burst” ..
.. just don’t rush your decision.

Opinions will vary as they should, because what is right for you isn't what's right for the next player (and there is no wrong BTW)

So here is my 2 cents:

1. Buy used, and play it first!
2. Depending on your price range and local, Id swing for an R8 or R9 (in my neck of the woods they range from $2200-$6000, obviously the ones at the high end of the range just sit on the used market forever)
2.1. If you go the R8/9 route, this is what I look for: Under 8.6 pounds, no R in the Ink stamp nd no mods, I want it bone stock, not someone else headaches
3. I know you don't want a weight relief LP, but some of the best reissue LPs I have played are 1989-1999 (inked stamped serial, real abr-1, bushing tuning keys) The colors are kinda ugly, and the stock PU kinda stink, but pop in your favorite PAFs, and a 50s harness and you are off to the races.

4. Dont snooze on the 70s Norlin era stuff, some of it is trash and some gems.. get your hands on it and see for yourself.

Ok, thats all for now.. BTW, I dont buy new and I dont like new gear.. I try my hardest to stay in the 60/50s, but that's an expensive rabbit hole and not for everyone.

Ditto on a used standard they can be had for a reasonable price 2000 or less and they are good guitars. but as was noted always, always play em first and check them over real good there are folks out there that will try to off load a problem.....good luck

I bought a 50s'. Was looking around on Reverb last night and found a great price on a brand new one from Sam Ash. Since they are closing all their stores there are some great deals right now. So if you're in the market, now is the time.

Absolutely, as soon as I get it.....

All but the most substantial mods (neck shave, routing, etc.) are easily reversible and usually bring down the asking price, sometimes considerably. Swapped pickups, control components, parts, plastics - all simple to correct if desired.

Don't rule out Traditionals. Some are not weight relieved and fit the bill of what you're looking for.
