I just received a 3 pickup '57 Custom Black Beauty yesterday. It was part of the payment I received for co-producing a local songwriter's latest CD. First I would like to say thanks to Ken at Aplus guitars. He went way above and beyond the call of duty in setting the instrument up to my specs (more on that later), and sold it to me at a very, very resonable price. And he got me the guitar a day earlier than expected! I requested some electronic alterations and he actually drove the instrument to another repair guy in his town who did the work (Ken saihe could do it, but the guy across town was really good). Thanks again Ken.
I had the guitar rewired with the switch set up like a 2 pickup LP. I used the rhythm pickup tone control for a volume pot on the middle pickup, and wired the treble pickup tone control as a master tone. This enables me to add the middle pickup to any of the others, and also gives the front/rear combination that a stock 3-pickup Custom doesn't offer.(stock middle switch position is middle and rear together on a 3-PU). I also had him replace all the pots with good 500K's and set it up with 11's.
The guitar arrived in perfect condition and has tone to da bone. I could not be more pleased with the way it turned out. I had never played a guitar wired this way and had a hunch that it would work. I think the Frampton is similar but I have never played one.
I'm 46 and have owned a lot of guitars in my life. I've had quite a few LP's over the years but never a Black Custom. When I was a kid, I saw a guitarist playing one, and thought it was the coolest guitar I had ever seen. Then seeing Keith using one in the Exile/Sticky Fingers period pretty much sealed the deal for me. So I've been wanting one for a long time and I finally got a good one.
I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to own this instrument and am grateful to the artist who purchased it for me. (Brent Burns www.brentburns.com).
OK, I'll shut up and play my guitar now.
