• THIS IS THE 25th ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE LES PAUL FORUM! PLEASE CELEBRATE WITH US AND SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION TO KEEP US GOING! We've made a large financial investment to convert the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and now have to move to a new host. We also have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

I am not the original owner, no mods, burstbucker 2 and 3 P/Us. I never felt the need to change these, the guitar sounds great the way it is.

I have a 2009 R9 VOS with BB2/BB3 (I put them in) in double creme....those sound good. Do you ever play that guitar? How big is the neck?

I can't answer for L.A.'s guitar but the neck on mine ( I own the #024 posted by funk49 on prev. page) is the nicest neck I've felt. I'm not just talking about the size which is R9. I'm talking about the rounding and shaping from the fret board through the binding. Right in that shoulder area is like no other that I remember.

The neck is a baseball bat, feels worn in, and perfect for me. And yes, I play this guitar just about everyday. The reason mine hang on the wall is so I can grab and go when I want to play them. I am down from 11 Les Pauls, to three. My Ross, a 54/57 goldtop conversion, and a refinned lemonburst from DJ. This neck feels the best of the three I currently have.

I like these guitars for the aging, at the time Murphy's heaviest.

If anyone cares #95 is on the bay at the moment, not mine btw.

Agree-
Rossingtons: #183 and #235, are my preferred "go to" guitars (no mods).
After many years 'n jams, the absolute sweet tone and insane playability- continue to deliver!
Only wish I had one more.

Too bad he ruined it by having Ross sign the top. Should have had him sign the back of the head. If I bought that one, I would not pay extra for the signature on the guitar b/c I would remove it immediately. The case is signed though.

I agree, I think the autograph devalues the guitar, especially where it is. But for those that have a thing for Lynrd Skynrd, it may be of some value.

I never was a big fan of the band, so to me it was the aging not much more.

So the one below is your last one, right? What number is it?

Agree -The Rossi thing has never been about the the Lyn Skyn band-
(not really a fan - though nuthin' against 'em)
Simply about the somewhat sweet TONE and RESPONSE
of that particular run- no reason to Modify on the two I play.
Whatever Murphy did- he did right by those.

This is #225.

Have you got a shot of the inside of the control cavity? Don't they have those small disk shaped caps? And modern wiring? (caps connected to middle lug on tone pots as opposed to 50s wiring where the caps are connected to the lower lug)

If so, that sounds like something that could make a noticeable tone improvement: bumblebees and 50s wiring. My guess is that the guitar sounds a little muddy if it is stock. The minor change I mention would get rid of the mud.

LOL! I love how everybody talks about the tone of these. It's just another historic. The tone is a little different because the pickups are different but it's still just another historic.

This guitar doesnt need a tone improvement, your guess is wrong.

Just another Historic? I don't think thats right. I'm sure there are other models that are as good but I have yet to find one. Again I'm sure there are others. Perhaps this particular finish with all of the work by Murphy the BB 2&3 etc. just works.

Its the same specs, only difference is BB3 & 2, and Grovers.

I have one of these guitars and it sounds amazing but I refuse to buy into the hype.

I did buy into the hype for years. I bought a Bloomfield and I compared the two guitars side by side and I noticed the Rossington had much more beef.

Then I later found out that the Rossington had BB3 and BB2 while the Bloomfield has BB2 and BB1 which is probably the reason why.

guitarman, aren't you kind of saying the Ross was the better guitar anyway? It DID come with the 2&3 and the Bloomfield didn't.
This subject could go forever.
Speaking just for myself, my low serial number Rossington is the best this 52 year old has played.

If it has modern wiring in the cavity, it is muddy compared to 1950s wiring. And that is a fact. The original Rossi burst will have 1950s wiring if it is original. I don't think Gibson went back to 1950s wiring until the 50th anniversary R9 last year. Can you post a pic of the inside of the cavity?
