Hey guys I am having a hard time figuring out which ferrules are used by Gibson on a 66' Firebird with Chrome hardware? Thanks in advance for any help.
Sorry for the oversized pics, having a hard time resizing them. The two pics of the Black Headstocks are just examples of the ferrules on almost every 66-68 Firebirds I can find.
Would it be sacrilege to put the typical nice thick, deep, heavy, Kluson stepped/ridged style ferrules vs the shallow, lightweight smooth rounded ones that 60's Non-reverse Firebirds seem to always come with? I really do not like how thin the smooth ferrules are , but I don't want it to be a very unoriginal change. The tuner holes of the headstock of the Firebird project I am working on have already beed reamed for larger tuners, so they will have to be filled and redialed anyway. That said the 2 ferrules in question are very close as far as the size of hole needed to fit, basically the same, though the thin ones seem a tiny bit smaller. I have seen a few with the nicer ferrules, but I question if they were ever original to 66-68 Firebirds? Does anyone know?
It would have been nice if the ferrules non-reverse Firebirds came with were the same nice stepped face, ridged Kluson style used on LP's and SG's etc., but almost all seem to be non-ridged and smooth faced, rounded over on the face like a donut, like the 50's single line/no line Kluson Deluxe thin ferrules that went on some acoustics and some LP Jr.'s...except in Chrome. Gibson used mostly Kluson 6 on a single plate tuners, but also the open back (Waverly?) style tuners like the ones mine came with. I have a second set that are stamped JAPAN. I have never removed the tuners on the headstock pictured, but they look Exactly the same as the loose set pictured next to the headstock. The reflection makes the loose set look much more chrome than the ones on the headstock, but they finish is actually very close, both chrome. Whichever tuners used on the vintage Non Reverse Firebirds, they almost always seem to have the thin smooth Ferrules .
If anyone has any info that would be great. I need a vintage set for a 66' Firebird with Chrome hardware and the Open Back (Waverly?) style tuners. I have never understood who made these open backs tuners that sometimes came on 66-68 Firebirds?
The #2,3,4 pics are Kluson ferrules, the larger stepped/ridged one is vintage and nickel, the other is the thin shallow light-weight ferrule.IMG_3065.jpegIMG_3069 2.jpegIMG_3071.jpegIMG_3070.jpeg
