It amused me when I got my M2M on the go last July(following axeman's very helpful advice) and talked with MZ about the same fat neck spec, how they(the staff there) were almost in awe of a 1 + inch depth at the 1st fret, like it was some sort of freakish thing:lol
Gibson started of with fat almost baseball bat necks as standard in the '50s............so it's a kind of serendipity to me that this is happening again:2cool
Well I haven't replied on here so I guess its time to do it in our old turff!! Congratulations Man !!!!The journey started in Nov. 2019. I had the opportunity to visit/tour the shop. After going through what seemed like 100 tops and bodies, the decision was made....well sort of. Anyway production got under way for my 60th Anniv M2M 1960 Les Paul in late January.
In the ensuing months, and after a few productions issues, a misplaced top, Covid closures (a few times) and some other unexpected snafu's, the guitar was finally done in Nov, 2020.
This was an awesome experience all around. Thanks to Tommy Colletti @ The Music Zoo and to PW at the shop for making this happen. As with my other two M2M's, the neck is HUGE. Big, fat, round and big shoulders. The 1st fret depth is 1.015". (My other M2M's are my '18 R7 Goldtop - 1.023" and my '18 CS-336 P90 - 1.031". This neck profile is now scanned at the shop for future Monster Neck lovers...!!
Now, why am I referring to this as the Birthday Burst? Well, I turned 60 on 2/13/20. The guitar is a 60th Anniv. 1960 Les Paul.....and the serial number is 0 0213...!!!! I was able to secure that serial number on my visit.
I was able to pick my own color....trans amber center with a brownish faded cherry rim and a brown stained back, instead of cherry. Lightly aged Grover Rotos and p'up covers add to the look. After almost 3 weeks of ownership, I'm super pleased. 8 lbs on the nose, big fat neck and the unpotted, double white Custombuckers sound really great. The flame mahogany neck looks really cool. In the pic with the body blanks, mine is the one that weigh in at 6 lbs 8 oz.
I have a million production photos, but can only post 8.
PS - Keep your eyes open for some an order of Monster Neck R8/R9's coming soon to The Music Zoo.!!!
It is good that you can find the humor in the delays borne out of the Pandemic which has flipped everything upside down and sideways and back . These are not normal times for Gibson Custom or guitar shops in general and everyone is doing the best they can with the hand of cards they are dealt with . May the Good Lord continue to Bless Gibson Custom as they are really firing on such an amazingly high level of quality in spite of the Pandemic . I really believe that this truly is the second Golden Era for Gibson because of such high quality !exactly.....and you and I discussed this guitar a while back. I was a long wait....and some of the delays were actually comical...but I'm so happy with the result.
nope...it was grabbed and gone. (This top wasn't a 2nd choice. It was a completely new choice.)Were you able to find your originally chosen top, or is this an alternate top?
It is so nice to hear that you actually came out better then you originally planned.nope...it was grabbed and gone. (This top wasn't a 2nd choice. It was a completely new choice.)
I wasn't worried/upset, as I knew I'd have a bunch of others to choose from. The reality is, the top I ended up with actually had more/deeper/wider flame, from top to bottom.
As seen in the pictures, what wasn't there before carving was the little "beauty" mark. I got a call about it and asked if I wanted another top. I said heck no, I like the uniqueness!
My biggest concern was weight and neck profile. The weight is perfect and the neck....omg that neck is a Monster and is the exact size of my other 2 M2M's.
As for the top...to me matching the right color with the type of top is paramount. Ive seen plain tops, with great coloring that look amazing. Ive also seen some amazing tops with colors that just don't do them justice.
I'm 100% pleased with the result.
