I will start off with the saying that I am a newly registered member as of about 15 minutes ago and although I have owned two to get pin USA Les Paul's in the past my first being what now is a very sought after 1975 black custom which I purchase with the help of my father in 1978 when I was 13 years old not realizing at the time what I had gotten my hands on for a measly $380. Then shamefully losing it in pawn when I was 29 years old, while I had my head up my a$?& Preoccupied with a girl I was dating and even at that time I believe the guitar was worth around $2,000 as I painstakingly found out from doing some research .I should have just tried to put it out of my head , but was hoping that what I found would justify the loss compared to the jollies I was getting with this chic and get over it.NADDA!! and at 59 years old today I still never have. Wow how could I with all the forthcoming triggers I would soon possess throughout my life including another Gibson standard and now several of a special run Epi les Paul's, including two 2010 plus top pro FX with double locking Floyd Rose ,1 in desert burst and the other in heritage cherry sunburst and then I have a 2011 nightfall which is kind of a prophecy or goth type model ,all of these which only ran for 2 to 3 years . To my pleasant surprise the two plus top pro FX that I picked up the one for $550 back in 2016 the other last year for $750 are now being sold on eBay for the upwards of $850-1100.00. I picked up the happy black nightfall that comes with EMG split coil pickups and Floyd Rose tremolo for $350 which needs some tlc and and finding out these are being sold for the upwards of $575 to $800. I'm absolutely in love with my 2 plus top pros with the stock probooker 2 and probucker 3 pickups . They also come stock with the split coil pickups which I seldom use and they're very very close to the Gibsons burstbuckers 2 and 3 I had in my recent usa standard ,but I don't compare the two like some people do because they're two different animals they're both absolutely wonderful sounding guitars and it's all subjective anyway to one's taste . But I will say this
, I still would not sell my two of Epis even if I had several Gibson LPS . One of the biggest reasons is if you are familiar with the plus top pro FX they are very close to the axvess Alex lifeson (RUSH)models that came out in the last few years without the bank busting price. and I've read many testimonies to which many have felt the same. Well that's pretty much my ammo what I played what I do play and at the end of all this there is a question: HAS anyone played the extra heavy 12/62 gauge Ernie Ball slinky strings? I UNDERSTAND FROM DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH THAT THEY ARE IDEAL FOR THOSE WHO LOVE THE DROP D AND LOWER TUNINGS FOR THAT VERY THICK HEAVY TONE. THAT SOUNDS ALL GOOD FOR WHEN I'M PLAYING THOSE POWER CHORDS AND MY HEAVIER STUFF, BUT I GUESS BECAUSE I AM QUITE DIVERSE AND PLAY DIFFERENT GENRES I DON'T WANT TO GIVE UP OR SACRIFICE OTHER TONAL CHARACTERISTICS LIKE HEARING CLEAR CUT MID-RANGES AND HIGH-END CLARITY. SO ANY INPUT WOULD BE APPRECIATED I KNOW THOSE ARE EXTREME STRINGS AND WHAT'S CONSIDERED HEAVY ACTUALLY STARTS WITH LIKE 10/56 ,S. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THERE ARE HYBRIDS HEAVY STRING #6,5,4..LIGHT#3,2,1 AND WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS PLAYED THOSE AS WELL.

I've got my future eye on a Lifeson -- but for the locking-term Floyd Rose types I do have which are more Strat-y, I would never go that heavy. Not for me.

Good luck in your research, you can always give them a try if your saddles and nut width are willing... and certainly Ernie Ball strings are well appreciated.

Welcome to the LPF. 🍑

I've used a few of those Ernie Ball sets for playing in C and C# standard tunings, and they were quite good. I've since then gravitated to buying most of my heavier gauge custom sets from String Joy though since I buy also buy sets in 13-64 for C standard, 14-68 for B standard, and 15-70 for A standard.
