Custombucker coil measurements/variance

Hi there all. I was wondering if anyone has measured the resistance variance between the screw and slug coil on newer Custombuckers.

I just bought a 64ri es 335 with custombuckers that both measure approx 7.5k and want to get it as close to 64 spec as possible. I understand that 64 pat # pickups measure around the same, but have balanced coils and use short Alnico V magnets.

I have a set of Rewind pat #’s in my SG and they sound excellent, but buying two short A5 mags would be much easier on my wallet.

I’ll probably go the magnet route anyway, but am wondering how offset the CB coil difference is.

Any info or suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

This may be what you are looking for? it is a old CB he is using but will give you a good inside look at them. In the vid he dissects a CB and shows the reading of each coil.

Unfortunately all magnets (of the same type) arn't created equal. I've got a good supply of Vintage Roughcast Short A5s, and they sound different from current production. Different heating/cooling cycles amoung other ingredient variables.

absolute fact! 👍 Dave stephens has worked on many old P.A.F's and really knows his art and he talks about this on his channel.

Thanks gents.

Very informative video.

And heard on the magnets. I’d be ordering from Rewind or Throbak, I trust them to use the proper alloy formulation.

I have some pretty good pickups in a box collecting dust, maybe I’ll just try to sell those and get another pair of Rewind Pat #’s.

I'm afraid that you'll find quite a range of coil patterns and various electrical readings if you start taking apart a handful of Custom Buckers.

At least, In a way, Gibson is being very true to their original humbucker production by creating these inconsistently. (y)

Most Custom Buckers (maybe 70-80% I've heard?) are very thin and weak sounding. Some players understandably like this, as an alternate to the more common muddy-neck-bucker, but it's not a vintage-accurate design or sound. They are bright with a bump in the lower treble, but the very top end extended treble isn't there. They aren't capable of those higher up breathy frequencies. It also seems the bass and low-mids are entirely cut out.

So, they are "bright" in some ways, because there is no content in the lower end, but I'd mostly call them "thin" or "narrow" sounding and weak.

I'm worried that the A5s will only boost those already peaky lower treble frequencies and scoop out more mids. ...but you will get a bump in actual output.

My advice - if the solder on the covers is still factory, flip them if you don't like them. You'll get more interest and a higher price with the covers still factory. If the covers are already off, magnets are relatively cheap so swap and learn!
