• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Custom Shop Years to Avoid?

I've been searching for an R9 for some time now and when I eventually find "the one," it will be my first Gibson Custom Shop guitar. As I've done research through the forums here, it seems there are some years that should generally be avoided:

- 2012 Due to two layer fretboards
- 2015 Built with shorter tenons than normal
- 2020 (Murphy Lab only) Finish lifting off the guitars

I'm only shopping in the pre-owned market as I just can't spend more than $5,000 on a guitar any time soon. Are there other years that should generally be avoided from the Gibson Custom Shop?

I have several 2012's and the fretboards are perfect.
I have 2015's and they don't have shorter tenons.
I have talked with my Gibson contacts and it is my opinion that the Murphy Lab finish issue is being overblown.

Perhaps instead of obsessing about details or worrying about which years the internet "experts" tell you should be avoided you could try playing the guitars and pick one that you like - a radical suggestion I know but it might just work!
