Can someone talk about slaving?

I have heard a lot of talk about slaving a small amp to a large amp (or is it the other way around?). I'm intrigued - can someone put it in plain english? Also, how do you take a small amp without a line out to a larger cabinet? wow, those are my dumb questions for the day:dead:

This is what I do for slaving..... I have a Marshall JCM 800 50watt combo -the one with channel switching and reverb- that I gig with. As a spare, I also carry an old Peavey Bandit 65 "just in case". One day, I plugged the Marshall's direct out into into the Peavey's power amp in jack. I used the direct out over the pre amp out because the direct out has a send level control on it. Anyway, I only have the "Marshall" sound out of both amps. The benefits are a bigger spread of sound, an extra 65 watts of power, and I don't feel like I'm carrying that Bandit around for nothing. By stacking that Bandit on the Marshall, I noticed I can also pin the people in the back up against the wall without turning the Marshall up.

Okay, but I have read Kieth Richards several times to say he likes to slave a vintage champ to a bigger amp. How does he do that?

Thanks,

Stephen

BTW, Mr Joshua-Not a stupid question, I have meant to ask this
Kieth question for several years, and forgot!

Hi,
There are a couple of different ways to slave an amp.

one is just to go from the direct out of one amp into the input of another.

I imagine what Keith does is the same thing Van Halen does or atleast did. Use a Load Box to connect the OUTPUT of an amplifier to the input of another. Van Halen would take a Marshall and dime it, then use a dummy load to bring it down to line level, put his effects next, then run it into an H&H poweramp. This gives you the ability to place all of your effects After the power amp. That's how Eddie got that jet plane flanger sound. It's actually pretty common in pro rigs.

Hope that helps,
Paul
