Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
Yes, crank a Marshall or a Soldano or a Boogie with a PAF guitar and it sounds like a cranked Marshall, SLO100 or Boogie, regardless of model Gibson, and if you crank it enough, even a Tele can sound the same - EG, Page's Tele on classic Zep.
When I played a lefty ES-345 for the first time (a 1962 sunburst/bigsby) I heard the voice of God! When I finally got one of my own, (1964 with Maestro) I find more bloom and just an overall more pleasing tone than a Les Paul. That said, the video doesn't do the 335 any favors. In fact based on it, I'd say the Les Paul buries the 335.
I think ES-3x5 guitars are hard guitars to find a really good one. I've gone through many before I found one that had "it". By comparison, it's almost hard to find a '50 Junior or goldtop that doesn't have "it", if that makes sense.
What I hear in the video is a really good Les Paul and a below average 335.
Alvin Lee with his ES 335 on "I'm Going Home" might be a burst killer. ES-335's and Les Paul's sound different because they are supposed to sound different.
IMO it's like comparing apples to oranges. They are two different types of instruments with some similarities, but not enough to make a comparison valid. Tell your wife you definitely need at least one of each.
Just my 2cents o.c.
