• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Anyone own a Les Paul Voodoo?

How does the guitar compare to other Les Pauls tonewise? Any other thoughts about them?

I'm think about picking a used one up and was just looking for advice from people that own or have played one.

I remember seeing 2 of these at a Surrey guitar store... they were priced midway between a LP standard and a LP Studio.

My initial thought was what a fugly looking guitar and a complete waste of a good les paul. Then when I looked at the price I sniffed exploitation... there's one born every minute... some rich goth kid without a clue but a big parental expense account... I don't care daddy I want black!!!!

Whoever bought one is a ***kin mug.

How is it creating a product that is exactly what a niche market wants 'exploitation'?

By that definition, every one of the 200 or so les paul model/color combinations is exploitation since it caters to a very small niche that like just that thing.

Don't be such a guitar snob.

personally i like them, i have been thinking about getting one. i thought it would be something neat with a differant sound to add to the line up. as far as L.P's go i have a 2003 standard and a BFG, i like variety. im just not the kind of person who see's the point in just getting 10 standards, i had rather have 10 differant guitars, there are alot of guitar snobs on here who hate everything thats not historic. wich if a historic is what does it for them, great! but they should be more open minded about the fact other things may do it for other people, and not put down everything else but what they think is cool. if the voodoo does it for you, and you like how it plays buy one. its going to be your guitar, so the only thing that really matters is how you feel about one.

also i think you will find more snobish rich kids playing standards or custom shops, since after all all they care about is what other people think, and how much it cost.

I think they look cool.. don't care for the skull inlay though... The cases were ultra-cool. I'd buy a case from you if you don't want it.

I would wager it's a lot like the swamp ash studio they have out now except with ceramic pickups.

P.s. not everyone wants standard 'burst, boring

Maybe if they banged them out at a price representative of the lower cost to make. But they don't. They put them at a price range nearer a standard.
So in fact your paying around £400 for the guitar (cheap woods, cheap pickups, matt black paint, no inlays) and another £600 for the image kudos.... that my friend is exploitation.

Its like all manner of retail these days ... take a cheap £30 watch movement, put it in a cheap but stylish case that has "Armani" written on it and flog it for £450. Then sit back and watch the idiots arrive in droves to buy it. Clever, but exploitation non the less.

i understood what you were saying. but the point i was making is not everyone out there likes a standard. so to them it would not matter, how comparable the price was to a guitar that did nothing for them. i have younger friends that think my standard looks like a "grandpa's" guitar, they are all over ESP's and ibanez. but the other les pauls you think are a joke they are all over. i dont nessisarly agree with them either. but alot of people like them are the ones making the music for the next generation. and many (not all) are doing it with ZERO intrest in traditional les pauls or other guitars from "back in the day"..

Eh, I thought they were fricking badass when I was 14. I still wouldn't kick one out of my house if given to me. And they can charge whatever the market will bear. Got to love free market economics

Who are you to say whats ok to buy and what's not?

Ok - I will rephrase...

Anyone who bought one at that price is a mug.

By the way... this was the retail price at a UK Guitar Store... perhaps I should be pointing my finger at the merchants... needless to say 18 months later the guitars were still there.

Also - what the market will bear is a fair price? Spoken like a true capitalist.
Unfortunately "what the market will bear" is spin. The truth is more to do with the command of a closed market, market barriers and price fixing - the prevention of any would-be wholesaler or retailer entering the market and selling at a true "fair" price. This is where "grey" markets evolve, and which are generally shut down ASAP by the existing players - so much for capitalism and free enterprise eh?!!

"Anyone who bought one at that price is a mug"

why? because its not what you would buy with your money?
its their labor that is Purchasing it, not yours. should they not be free
to spend their money on whatever does it for them and meets their needs?
it dosent matter what the price is if its what you want.
its not like its some crazy amount of money either.
just because someones taste is differant than yours
does not make their choice any less valid than yours.
its just shows your lack of openmindedness for having to sling
names at people whos thinking is not in line with yours.

I really wanted to buy an explorer from that series, and load it with EMG's .

I never dug the LP's or sg's, but a local guitarist would bring his LP voodoo in for setups and it looked so bad ass. It was really shined up in spots, forearm, etc.
I agree about the little skull inlay though. same with the moon+star o the gothics, or the menace inlays, but thats Gibson, we can't expect less.

Back to the root...

In answer to your question ... Tone: harsh, brittle, made for high gain saturated distortion, but not much else. Looks: It has Gibson written on it, and looks like a les paul... but it isn't really. Price: way too much.

EMG32 - If you're after that bargain basement sound and look - go buy a bargain basement guitar... don't waste your money on this - second hand or not. You can get a particularly crap tone out of any cheap guitar with cheap pickups...

Caveat Emptor my friend. This means buyer beware!! Especially if you have your eye on a heavily marketed piece of junk. I wouldn't like to think that anyone gave you the thumbs up on this when six months down the line you will have a guitar that is fit for only one purpose, you have grown to loathe, can't sell on and are sitting there wishing you'd bought a real Les Paul with your hard earned cash. And how do I know this?... music school... many students... many guitars, some expensive, some not, mostly good choices however... and one very dejected fellow, with piece of black plank in hand... bought with a large chunk of his grant.

And as for the rest of you and your righteous harping... how hypocritical of you to assert an individuals right to choose whilst simultaneously p*ssing all over my freely expressed opinion.
