I PLAY WITH A BAND THAT REQUIRES ME TO DROP MY 'E' STRING TO A 'D' STRING EVERY FEW SONGS AND I WAS WONDERING IF THERE WAS ANYONE THAT SOLD A DROP TUNER LIKE THE "HIPSHOT" TUNERS STEWMAC SELLS BUT THAT WILL MATCH AND FIT MY '74 LES PAUL STANDARD. I HAVE GOLD TUNERS WITH THE AGED VINTAGE STYLE KNOBS.

Why do you need a new tuner to drop to D?

Cant you do it with the one you have now?

How long does it take you to tune to drop-D? If it's any longer than 10 seconds or so, you've got problems.

i dont understand why you need anything to tune it down to D, i played in a band that used D tuning alot and it took all of 5 seconds to tune it down

whenever i did it, i'd leave a bit of distortion on with the vol knob turned down to about 2 or 3, then hit the top E and A strings and tune it down until i hit the sweet spot.. and then to make sure, i hit the D tuned E string along with the actual D string to check the tuning... i've never used actual tuning machines to tune my guitar, always by ear

Oh don't get me wrong, I can do it as well. Ive been playing for ever...(fret the D octave on the a string and tune till they are in sync) I just like those hipshot extender keys they make, and sometimes I may want to set it to another note, or change in the middle of a song with the flick of button.

They make em for bass and everything else but what you need.
Draw it on paper and get a patent...you might have something here!:)spin

You might want to check, but if I'm not mistaken Eddie Van Halen had a device like this made years ago by a manufacturer whose name I can't remember at this time. I'm sure it is probably already patented.

Hipshot makes 2 different guitar "extender" tuners, but neither has vintage ("Kluson") style plasticky knobs. One is built off a Schaller tuner (squarish button) and one is built off a Grover tuner (ovalish button). You can get them in nickel, black, or gold.

I use these on several of my guitars because I switch from E to D (and back again) **within** some songs. It's a lot faster than the 2-3 seconds it takes to manually tune down or up, so fast that I can switch between the verse & chorus & back again for the solo if need be.

To get them to work really well, though, you have to be willing to put in a little time with a nut file and really fine sandpaper to get that nut slot as smooooooooth as possible.

The one made for Eddie Van Halen is designed to fit onto a Floyd Rose (I think) double-locking trem thingie, which you should not have on your Les Paul anyway :)

the dtuner is useful because you can use multiple tunings in the same song which the steinberger transtrem was also capable of doing. Im also aware of the transperformance bridge that jimmy page likes to use

You can get brass colored D tuner from Hipshot and then just change the knob with the one from your existing tuner. I have them in two of my guitars and about to put them on more. They with phenomenally well and i recommend that brand.

And i do the same thing you do...i flip to drop D during songs. Even 3 seconds is too long a delay. The drop tuner let's me change right on the very next beat

Didn’t Waylon Jennings use a special drop-D tuner on his leather bound telecaster?
