A second attempt at getting a good Slash Les Paul.

Four years ago I bought this beautiful orange Slash Les Paul. It was used at Guitar Center. A dentist who hung it on the wall as art and didn’t really play it sold it to GC. The action was super high so when I set it up properly I learned why. The neck had warped.

That guitar was Vermillion Burst. It was beautiful but I returned it because of the neck. Many Les Pauls have passed through my hands since then but not another Slash. Yesterday I found another nice Slash model so I bought it. It’s shipping from Guitar Center in California so it should arrive on Thursday.

I should point out that this is my third Les Paul using the same money. I bought a used goldtop from Guitar Center but when it arrived it had the slim taper neck.

So I returned it, added $300 and bought a Mod Shop in Dirty Lemon.

I loved it but it was over nine pounds. I then picked up a Les Paul CR8 in Lemon Fade using different money.

That one weighs a little over 7 pounds. I started to think that the two lemons were similar in appearance and both have a fat neck so I’ll probably only play the lighter R8. I checked the calendar and it was the 45th and final day for a full refund. So I brought the Mod Shop back, added another $300 and ordered the Slash.

My wife asked me if I feel silly buying used guitars and then returning them for no other reason than I changed my mind. No, I do not. I’m just taking advantage of their return policy. My salesman is one of the managers and he said he doesn’t mind at all because it brings in cool inventory. He even refunded my shipping without me even asking.

I really love the aged hardware on my R8. The bridge is a Faber and the tuners were aged by the original owner. I’d like to put aged hardware on my Slash guitar. I’ll probably buy a Faber bridge but for the tuners I was thinking of the aged nickel tuners from ThroBak.

I’m looking for your suggestions and recommendations for aged hardware, please.

I ordered my parts. I went with the aged nickel Faber Master Kit Plus for the bridge and tailpiece. I ordered aged nickel Grover tuners, which are totally bad ass. I ordered vintage nickel Dunlop Strap Locks which I will age with vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and salt. And, finally I ordered aged gold speed knobs from Charles Guitars out of the UK.

The guitar arrives at Guitar Center tomorrow. It's my day off. We are getting four inches of snow but I will brave the storm to go to pick it up.

It’s a beautiful guitar. I’ll take some pictures tomorrow. The weight is not something I was excited about. 9 pounds 12 ounces. I like my Les Pauls under 9 since I only play standing, but what a beautiful guitar. I may have to live with the extra pound. I have a nice 3 inch leather strap.

I like my action as low as possible without buzzing. The high E string was perfect but the low E had much higher action. So I looked at the bridge and the low E side was visibly wound higher up. It was sharply angled. I set the guitar up properly and now I hear a buzzing on the low E string somewhere in the area of between the nut and fourth fret. So I adjusted the truss rod to raise the action a hair that way but it did not help.

I’m going to a really good luthier shop today to pick up my R8 and drop off my Modern so I will bring the Slash and ask for their diagnosis. The R8 and Modern are just having pickup swaps. My friend gave me a set of DiMarzio EVH-Axis pickups for the Modern. The R8 got a set of double cream Seymour Duncan Bonamassa Amos.

The guy at the shop said that my low E string nut slot is too deep. The neck is fine. He will get it set up perfectly.

The aged knobs arrived from England and they are really nice. I got them from Charles Guitars.

Just got the Slash back from the guitar shop. The nut was cut too deeply so they filled it in a little and now the setup is great. The aged parts look amazing.

nice guitar! Does the nut spacing seem a little off though? that could be a part of your problem. Cheers!

I just ordered an aged switch tip and aged poker chip from Charles Guitars. Mine are too new looking compared with the aged hardware.

I played the Slash at band practice and it sounded fantastic. The Seymour Duncan Slash set is perfect for the 80's rock that my band covers. We are playing out on Saturday and I will use the Slash. The other guitarist has a Slash Victoria.
