• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Great links thanks guys.

Found this too, seems like the inspiration for Nigel.
68 interview

Yeah, I think Nigel stole a lot of thing from that interview and the Jeff Beck one a little later... the Beck interview, with some dweeby annoucer dude and Jeff's band in tow is a classic.

Calpton has never made a secret of the woodshedding he did with Freddie King's music. Not only is the study evident in EC's guitar, but Freddie King's vocal style is right dead center in Eric's.

That guitar now rests in the hands of the owners of Guitar Center. They bought it at Sothebys for around 800,000. I am always amazed at how much Clapton's mid boosted strat tone sounds like his tone from the famous Red Gibby 335. Listen to his version from the Crossroads 2004 DVD of, Have you ever loved a woman played on his Crash II Strat it is amazingly close.
Gibson religously copied that guitar and when they sent him the prototype he actually thought it was the original. So you could have that exact guitar. If you can find one.

What is so good when Eric Clapton plays a Gibson, to my ears it is the sound I want to hear.... He comes across on those vids as 'of age', a mature bluesman.... Very enjoyable.... :salude

It seems as well as it is the sound HE want's to hear as well. Much more inspired (and way better sounding...) than many of his Strat performances - in my opinion...

Good one. His tone and style change a lot when he doesn't use a pick.

Hearing all those great Gibson-played blues makes me get all misty remembering Freddie King from back when. Eric's style is his own.. but you can hear some of Freddie coming through at times... just fantastic!!

It was amazing to watch Freddie play.. he was bigger than life and had hands the size of a catcher's mitt... but man oh man could he get those beautiful sweet tones from his guitar. Seemed like the amp volume was always wide open .. yet he could make a guitar purr like a baby or scream like a demon.

Actually it was Christie's there at Rockefeller Center in NYC. Hammer price for the 64 335 was $750k and with the buyer's premium, GC had to pay $847,500. Biggest fish of the auction until Blackie went last at $959,500.

I always post these in these discussions. (Where's Waldo?)
