As much as I like all Les Pauls, I've always had a thing for Customs. I have always owned at least one black custom.
How can you fight all that binding, let alone pearl block inlays and split diamond headstocks.
But there was something missing in a black guitar. I can't see any wood grain... UNTIL NOW
Courtesy of our own Mark at Marks Guitar Loft. (Great guy, great shop) I picked up a 2002, 68 Flametop Reissue Custom.
The guitar sounds great, plays like butter, and looks far better than this picture. It's fairly heavy, though not much different than most other 68 reissues I've tried. The neck is huge, but somehow feels very nice. I've always liked bigger necks anyhow so this was an actual selling point. The only upgrade I'm going to make is an aluminum tailpiece. Not sure if it has Burstbuckers or 57's. I'll pull the front pickup sometime. (I know some of these guitars had Burstbuckers in 2002.)
The biggest surprise was the combination of sustain and resonance this thing has. I always thought heavier guitars had better sustain, at the expense of warmth. Well, I was wrong. This is a very warm sounding Custom with violin like sustain.
I was trying to compare the sound of this guitar to some of my favorite records. Doesn't really sound like Zeppelin, but does sound very much like early Gary Moore. I can live with that
