• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

SOLD.............!!! I swear that at one point I was reluctant that this guitar would sell for that much, is this crazy market going to stop anytime soon?, I'm dying to have an early 60's SG but god from $8K which is when I started shopping for one to 17.5K now is just crazy.
Anyone here feels like robbing some bank, hopefully by the time we are done we'll have enought time to buy our guitars before they go up again in price.

Guitarist: Look, here´s a Les Paul from 1954. It´s never played. It even has the original price tag!
journalist: Oh, let me test!
Guitarist: No! Don´t touch it!
Journalist: Ok, but I can watch?
Guitarist: Eh...no. Come look over here instead. This is my amp with controls that goes to 11.

"I was just pointing at it."

"Well don't point, even. You've seen enough of that one."

I had a 1960 SG/LP Standard (rare, inked-on number starting with zero) and it sounded nice on the neck pickup but kinda harsh on the bridge. And, yes, the Lonnie Mack sideways bender is awkward and impossible to adjust the string tension...I sold the guitar and got a '56 "alnico" LP Custom that was quite nice...

gads I bought a 61 refin 2 years ago for under 3k (and don't it sound good! :)). I wonder if these escalations in price will rebound in some? For a year or so I was saving up my money to get a 2 PAF LP Custom from Gruhn's for 10k. 10k - not possible now. I do see a lot of early 60's SG LP\SG's on ebay that don't seem to get the asking price.

I bought my Lesp Paul-SG for 500 in the mid-70s. It was fun to see the price some years ago at some 6-7k. The current price of 17,5k is not fun at all. It means that one can´t use it for gigs, and I can´t leave it where we rehearse. Becuase of that I recently bought a HM Strat. They are reasonable priced, I thought, and the guitar I found was a very nice player. However, a guy I know suddenly discovered it was a HM Strat Ultra, which was made in less than 1000 ex and was a luxury model of the HM Strats. Rare, and sought after by collectors. Now I can´t use that guitar for gigs either. And no one is allowed to even point at my guitars. Pity me... :)

Doesn't Angus use a stop tail SG these days? And Clapton's was modified to anchor the strings to the front of the frame of the Lyre tail. The steeper break angle of the strings down to the body improve sustain in both. A Bigsby tail also pulls the strings down to the body and improves sustain. The tone of the SGs with the Lonnie Mack TP is GREAT - I never said it wasn't. But the lack of sustain makes it hard to rock hard with em. I'm using this one now - believe it or not the Bigsby helps!:

I'd love to see a good pic of claptons modified Tp. I made the neck angle on my to the specs I normally use for a TOM and the break angle is a bit shallow! I should have got ahold of a TP first. It works though lucky for me. I didn't want to put a stud on it. Here is a picture of it almost done save for a fiew pieces of trim.

How do you keep the guitar in tune?
Does it go out of tune after the use of the bigsby?
I have always had problems with anything that is not a stoptail.

I've been drooling all over that guitar at Solid Body Guitars but the axe is marked at $17,500..... :wha , is that too much?, it looks nice and clean but gosh is really crazy out there with the vintage guitars and their prices and I don't know if I will be regreting it later.
Any suggestions?.

Thanks for your opinions..... :dude
The guitar looks very nice.
The condition is OK but I wander how it plays? and sounds? after all for 17.5 you can have a lot of reissues, almost 10 new ones that will play and sound very good.
take care,

Angus has been mainly using a stoptail for ages, even in the beginning:

First they were his vibrola guitars which had been converted, then eventually proper stoptails. The tailpiece model was his first SG and the one he used in the early vids, so its the one he became most known for.

Its a miracle but it actually does stay in tune and I get on it (the Bigsby) pretty hard - especially when I'm a little drunk. I do a lot of that Jeff Beck thing - pull up and let it snap back while picking (or plucking) the string. I love that - I going to get that guitar out right now!

You know, when I was a kid and had been taking lessons for a couple of years. The SG/Les-Paul was the shit to me. To me it was the cats-ass. I just thought it was the most beautiful guitar on earth. I still think its one of the prettiest guitars out there. But after playing one it sort of lost its appeal to me. Although I have some vintage equip. I am a player first. And for that kind of scooby-snacks I just feel there are a few axe's [vintage] out there that I would prefer to own. But this is my opinion, hell if it gets it for you go for it.

Here's a pic of my 61 SG/Les Paul. I always had tuning problems until I changed the bridge. Now it stays in tune great. I had it refretted with jumbo frets. Plays and sounds incredible.

I saw AC/DC in concert in 1980 on the Back in Black tour. Angus used his late 60's SG with the Maestro Vibrola the whole show. He didn't have any tuning problems. His tone was INCREDIBLE. Exact squeals and harmonics like he got on all the early AC/DC albums.
I saw them again a few years later and he used a newer stop tailpiece SG. They souned great but his tone was definately not the same. Sounded newer and brighter.

Yea, nice ax. Mine looks the same, but I have removed also the cover over the trem. Looks like old machine parts under; cool. You have changed to Grovers, too?

That is a nice looking guitar. When I was young, I was not too fond of Angus Young's tone but now that I'm a lot older (38) I realized what an amazing, unique and delicious crunch tone he has (had) specially in the album For Those About To Rock......so much thta I'm shopping for an earlt 60's SG just to kill the nostalgia... :lol

Schaller's on my 61. I've always preferred them over Grovers.

Not a '61 but a super clean '62 I stumbled across last year. The amp is a '62 with 2x12 cabinet that really honks with the Les Paul SG! :dude

That 62 just kills me every single time you post the pic....., just an amazing and clean SG, how is the sustain in your guitar? does it hold the notes?...although I gotta admited if I had a guitar that clean I would be scared to play it.
