As you saw I have a thread a few weeks back looking for pictures of Trannies for a 54 Fender Twin amp. I did end up getting the amp and was able to get the price down from where it was. Like I said this is a rare amp as it still has the 5AU4 rectifier and the two 6L6's, but the kicker 1x12ay7 and 3x12ax7's. Before this version it had 4x6SC7's It shares a middle ground in the circuitry as the next version has 2x5y3,2x6L6's and 3x12ax7's It has had black tolex put on it, but off the cab will go to get retweeded. The OT is original, but the power I'm not sure as the wire is cloth and period correct. The speakers are original, it came with a Tuki cover which I had no Idea it came with it. I unfortunately dropped one of the 6L6G's after wiggling it. I have the 5881 which break up sooner. Amp sounds fantastic, but I will source out some better caps for it. I will do my normal cleanup. Amp is quiet and very very loud. I will get some vids when I have time.

Kudos, mapleFlame. It looks like you may have a transitional amp there.
The Teagle/Sprung book mentions just such a transition. They say that the first 5D8 Twin amps that changed away from the octal preamp tubes used the 3 x 12AY7's and a single 12AX7 and still had a single 5u4 rectifier...Pg. 81.
My low power Twin was the 5E8A which used the 2 x 5U4's.

MapleFlame, I had forgotten this, but my 5E8A was covered in black vinyl when I bought it. I suppose the 'poor boys' who owned the tweeds in the mid-60's wanted to look like the guys who were able to buy new BF Fenders? One of the '59 Bandmasters that I owned at the same time had been covered in.....brown vinyl. The '52 Pro I have now was covered...badly so it was not a factory white vinyl TV Pro... in some white vinyl. The '60's hit those tweed fellows hard, didn't it??

You hit it on the head, jealous of the new black faced amps that came out. Keeping up with the Jone's. I had a harvard that was black vinyled. Changed it quickly.

The tube chart indicates July of 1953, however, some of the pots are dated the 12th week of 1954.

I'll post some more pics in Mapleflame's thread requesting transformer pics.

Brown Recluse, I see the oddities in your amp....the tube chart is dated July 1953, and the tube compliment agrees with that date. I also see those pots dated to the 12th week of '54, right? What is the chassis serial number on the amp...it is so out of focus that I can't read it, but it doesn't really look like it agrees with that '0123' that is written on the tube chart. Ime, those two numbers agree when a cab and a chassis leave the factory together under 'normal conditions.

Wally, The serial number on the chassis is 0123:

Cool serial, I will look at mine. It's nice to see another with the same tube compliments. Would love a picture of the innards.

Brown Recluse, there is that number! Thanks. That is intriguing.
Brown, that tape inside the chassis....does that read "New Fibre Board"
and "0123 Walker". Even more interesting if it does. I have never seen that.

Maybe a factory repair?
