• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Please check these late PAFs, if they are unaltered

I am considering to buy an early 63 ES355 supposedly with original PAFs. As i am not a PAF expert, could you please check the photo and tell me, if they are ok? I noticed fairly big amounts of solder on them. I am not able to say for sure, if the covers were once removed or not. Many thanks for help.

I don’t see any red flags. The solder looks fine to me. I do like the fact that the sticker is off to the side on the neck pickup. That seems to be a minor feature of the late PAFs. However, the blue ink saying “neck” may imply that the neck pickup may have been in and out of the guitar at one point. Is the Varitone intact? (Does it have a Varitone?)

I say they look good.

I await further opinions from the arm-chair PAF experts! :)

Have you looked at the seller's other ads? They look kind of weird. That Tele almost definitely has a refin, althought there is no mention of that.
A '63 330 in walnut finish - really? Again no mention of a refin.
That 355 looks nice, but the lacquer almost looks too good to be original.

I'm a bit sceptical about the originality of his guitars... :hmm

Would concerns of alteration be inside ? After all covers & base plates would be the least of my concerns if the cover's had been removed !

Good point, they all have some weird factor... The finish is really too shiny for 56 years, i will pass on this one. Too much risk. :hmm

I would not even consider any ES guitar without a stopbar tail piece & I've owned three 60's one early 70's all with trapeze tails . Imo these guitars are way off the mark ! I just love my ES 345 with a stopbar tail piece with a tune-o-matic !
