• Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!
  • WE ARE MOVING THE LES PAUL FORUM TO A NEW HOSTING PROVIDER OVER THE NEXT 5-10 DAYS. We will experience downtime during that period. Please be patient and have confidence that we will return! Many thanks, Mike Slubowski, Admin

Noob with a '59 ... really?

The auction [MOD EDIT] Pump and Dump or for sale advertisements are not permitted outside of the classifieds.

So, this whole thread has just been a month long "pump and dump" spam.
Why am I not surprised. :rolleyes

No; trying to find out exactly what I have, and trying to represent it as honestly as possible. If it makes you feel any better Tom; the values on this forum are far less than I would consider accepting... maybe I'll get stuck with it? :eek:la In any event, and for the greater good: another yet-unknown one-of-246-made '59 Les Paul's has finally made it's way out into the Limelight from the depths of a hidden collection. Is'nt THAT worth celebrating on it's own??
I know in my rare-car world (MOPAR'S Baby!) that we would be dancing in the streets if another rare/hidden one finally showed up on the radar after all there years :)
My '69 GTX... I brought it back from the dead after spending 30-years in someone's backyard rotting :) I've owned it for 15 years, and it did'nt look anywhere CLOSE to the way it looks now... still without a re-paint! Sometimes, you just gotta know what you're looking at! ;)

No; trying to find out exactly what I have, and trying to represent it as honestly as possible.

Okay, perhaps my response was too harsh.
It can be a fine line between asking about the value of something you are planning on selling, and actual spam.

From the beginning, I've had a hard time figuring out what you were truly looking for. The reluctance to look into the pickups started it [for me]. It would be critical for determining value [as I thought you wanted to find out]. PAFs themselves are worth thousands, and yet you didn't want to inspect [confirm] them because of "patina" on some common cheap screws. I found that confusing. I got the idea that this was slowly becoming an ad. [perhaps my mistake] Now it's suddenly for sale. :hmm

It helps to be able to say exactly what it is, and not just rely on what you were told. That was my point with the case. If you were told misinformation about the case, maybe the other info given was also wrong. More reason to dig deeply, to know exactly [as much as possible] what this guitar is.

If it makes you feel any better Tom; the values on this forum are far less than I would consider accepting... maybe I'll get stuck with it? :eek:la

This means absolutely nothing to me. I hope you are able to sell it and that the buyer is happy with it. The market for triple PAF Customs seems very strange at the moment, maybe based on few buyers. Interesting, as they are iconic vintage Les Pauls at the upper end of the design.

Exactly, and well said Tom. My knowledge base in this field was near-nothing. I wanted to find out what I have, represent it honestly, and... Yes: frankly I was afraid to turn a screw on it because I DO realize that I'm dealing with a historic instrument, and my 1st instinct always is to "Do No Harm".
Removal of the pickups, overall clean-up, and installation of the knobs and pickguard were all done at the suggestion of your Forum members, and for that, I am grateful. I would not have done this otherwise :)

Additionally: I DID learn a hell of a lot, and I will always carry that with me. Thank You all! :dude:

I'm 61 years old BTW... :O

Do you play guitar? Own any others? As great as these guitars are, they are functionally worthless without a complimentary amp. If you really want to put it together, you now need to acquire and restore the symbiotic amp mate.

I'm an amateur player and I own a Godin Freeway and a Gretsch Electromatic. My amp is the Bugera 22W (Tubes/single-12") you see behind the Gibson in my video.

Your video is great for showing the over all condition, and I'm sure the auction will likely draw some bidders, but there is an awful lot of supposition regarding originality (presumably based upon this thread)

I don't want to come across as rude, and I'm not going to try to dissuade you from your current course of action, but given the potential value, don't you think a proper authentication would go a long way in realizing the monetary return you are seeking?

I'm confused - you've scored a lifetime prize guitar. Many professionals look for years and trade dozens of guitars to find something like this - why would you sell it? I'd sell the Gretsch and the Bugera, and start looking for a JMP or a Blackface.

I must have missed the post with the info showing this to be a 1959, and not some other year. :hmm

Could someone please point out that post? :salude

It's because all the bestest, most greatest, Les Paul's ever are from 1959!! How could it possibly be anything else... :##

Looks like the number of fake bursts just shot through the roof. According to this listing, there were only 246 Les Pauls of all styles made in 1959.

I missed that! Not totally surprised though. :ganz

Yep...the eBay auction for this LP Custom misstates the number of Les Pauls produced in 1959. From eBay: "Gibson only made a total of 246 Les Paul's in 1959... that's ALL styles, and far less of those were the Les Paul Custom "Black Beauty" models with gold hardware and 3-Pickups!"

The correct number according to the shipping totals in Tom Wheeler's book, American Guitars, page 192, lists a total of 7,828 Les Pauls of all models produced in 1959. Not 246, which is the number of Les Paul Customs produced in 1959.

Just one order of magnitude difference between the two numbers. :dang
